Groovy Tunes; Friday [ 05/02 ]

The events that would be going on this weekend had Chad realizing that he really didn't have a graduation mix, and went about possibly putting one today. The only thing was that the kittens seemed to really want attention today and, as soon as he would go to write something down, there'd be a kitten on top of his notebook, smushing its face into Chad's hand or arm or face, and, well...You couldn't say no to a kitten.

Needless to say, by the end of the night, Chad was definitely not going to have a new list.

Or at him. Same thing.

Melody bounced in rather early for such bouncing, blond hair tucked beneath a bandanna. She scooped up a kitten and scratched its ears as she leaned against the counter. "Hi Chaaaaaad, how are you today?"

"I'm good," Chad answered because, really. There were kittens. Of course he was good. "How're you, Melody?"

Besides bouncy, obviously. Chad kind of figured that went without saying.

It really did.

"It is a gorgeous day and I'm cuddling a kitten" -- who was currently trying to escape, but never mind that -- "and talking with my favorite boy employee, who is playing awesome music. So I'm fantastic," she said, smiling.

It might be suspected she was trying to butter Chad up.

It might. Just a little. Chad tilted his head slightly. "Aren't I your only boy employee?" he pointed out, unless there was something Teyla wasn't telling them. "And I always play awesome music." The last one ended with a slight grunt, an affront against the suggestion that he would play anything but.

"Uh-huh, but you'd be my favorite even if I had a hundred of you." Which might even be true.

She bit her lip slightly, nervous for some reason about the favor she was about to ask. "How long have you worked here, total? You kinda came with the store when I bought it."

"Uhhh..."

That was...a really good question. Chad took a moment...a long moment...to think about it.

"I started wokin' here when I started going here." He could remember now walking by, seeing the hiring sign, and then totally pouncing on the opportunity as soon as he could, because, dude. MUSIC. "So, it's been, like, over a year. Year and a half-ish? Forever, pretty much."

He'd been with the store longer than he'd been with Teddy. Now that was surreal.

"That is forever," Melody agreed. She generally had the attention span of a goldfish, so a year and a half of anything except the Pussycats was almost beyond her ken.

"So ... how would you feel about a promotion?"

"Promotion?" Chad asked out of confusion more than anything else. "To what?" After all, like Melody said, he already had the best boy employee title. How did you possibly do better than that?

"I'm going back on tour, Chad," Mel explained, eyes shining. "We're doing Asia then Australia then South America, and I dunno how long it'll be but at least six months, and I don't even know if I'll come back at the end or if it'll be time for us to make another record, so I'm putting the store up for sale 'cause I figure if it's meant to be mine, it just won't sell and I'll know to come home here, right?"

"But it would still need a manager while I'm away, and I'd kind of like that to be you."

"...You're going on tour?"

Of course, leave it to Chad to fixate on that part of it as if none of the other stuff existed. He couldn't help it, though. That sounded awesome.

"That's awesome."

"It so is," Melody said, excited to be talking to someone who Got It. "Technically it's a Josie McCoy tour, not a Pussycats tour, but I talked to Josie and it sounds like everything will be pretty much the same except her new manager doesn't want us to wear the ears all night."

Which she wasn't sulking about. Much.

"But yeah, I always said I'd leave when we were finally ready to do a band thing, and I guess this is kind of it."

Chad nodded. "Not all night, but you still get to wear them some of the night, right?" he asked. Because he had a penchant for picking out the important parts in any conversation.

"Dunno," Mel answered, completely forgetting the whole question of the manager position.

"See, we were kind of talking about a Pussycats medley, and of course we'd need ears for that" -- because, yes, this was obvious to her - "but medleys are kinda Barbra Streisand in Vegas, so I'm hoping we just put on the ears and do a couple songs from our record. But it's Josie's decision, I'm behind her whatever."

Chad nodded in understanding. "I hope you guys do at least a few songs in the ears, then." Because that would be cool. And it was also reminding him of certain teal antlers, which reminded him that he was going to try to start up a band again, but now he wasn't sure if he'd have the time.

...Why wouldn't he have the time?

...Oh, right. Manager.

This was all, of course, a rather slow process in Chad's head, bringing eventually to say, "So, manager. Cool. Store'll be in good hands." He gave Melody a thumbs up.

"I so knew it would be," Melody bounced, after she gave up puzzling over cat ears and remembered why she had come in the store in the first place. "My accountant takes care of the rent and utilities and all that? So basically just order stuff, hire people if you have to, clean up the shop if we get an invasion of giant leaky ketchup packets. And you can call me if anything too weird comes up."

She wasn't sure what would be too weird for Chad, but there might be something.

"And you get $3 extra an hour out of the deal."

Oooooh, a raise! Chad was liking this even more and more.

"...Weirder than invading leaky ketchup packets?" he asked, because you could never be too clear on that sort of thing, right?

Melody tilted her head to the side, screwing up her face in concentration. "Yeah! Like ..." She wasn't sure what, but it totally could happen. "Invading sentient exploding jellybeans." There, she had an example.

"Or anything that totally wrecks the store."

"Anything that wrecks the store is a good guideline I think, yeah," Chad said, nodding in agreement.

"Probably the easiest one to remember, too," Melody nodded in agreement. "Is there anything else you needed to know? No pressure, I'm here until next Friday in case you think of something later."

[OOC: Fleeing until 8-ish.]

Chad nodded. "Nothin' right now, but, yeah, if anything before Friday, I'll let you know."

"Great. I'll stop in to say bye if I have time, anyhow," she promised, and leaned over the counter, reaching for a hug.

"You better," Chad informed her with a grunt, before reaching over and giving Melody the hug she was looking for. And possibly crushing something in the process.

She wasn't using those ribs, anyhow.

"Oof!" Melody said happily, letting him go. "See you next week, Favorite Manager Boy."

"See ya later," Chad agreed, "Favourite...Boss...Lady...Person."

Watch out for kittens underfoot!

I can't believe it's already May.
