Graveyard: Early Monday Evening

It was her last patrol in Fandom. After that it was over the causeway and then... whatever came next. She'd sent out a *handwavey* e-mail and left notes for various people to let them know if they wanted to see her off, that this would be the place for it.

Sitting on a gravestone, Mel took one last look around. Could someone really feel sentimental about a graveyard?

"So this is it, huh?" Sokka asked, gingerly walking around the graves as he approached Mel. "One last patrol, and then you're off to save the world?"

He bit his lip, thinking. "If we were to have, say, a huge infestation of lurks in the Danger Room, you'd have to stay until they were all gone, wouldn't you?"

Zuko wasn't sure why he was saying goodbye at the graveyard, but he managed to show up nonetheless.

Gabriel sat perched on a tombstone, black wings towring above him. "Hi!" he called out to Mel, sounding eerily cheerful.

"Yeah, but they're not real," Mel said giving him a grin. "I'm going to need more than just a monster that disappears at the flick of a switch."

"Hey, yourself," Mel replied. "Shouldn't you be off to help save the world?"

Mel eyed the creepy guy carefully. Last time? Not so much with the wings.

"Hi," she said warily. "Just so you know? Last time you'll see me crawling around the graveyard."

"Yes," he agreed, "but I finally got the room to myself so I figured I should take advantage of it."

Look, an actual joke.

Xander might be a little unclear on this saying goodbye concept. "You're doing what, now?"

Sokka nodded sadly. "Yeah, I know. It's just... It has to be today? Destiny sucks."

Mel slipped her arms around Sokka. "Yeah. I know. Timing sucks. If there was more time, I'd wouldn't go but..."

Mel snorted in amusement. "Try not to have any wild parties," Mel said sarcastically. "You might disturb the neighbors."

"What?" Mel said. "I graduated, time for me to go, right?"

"You graduated, time for you to go where?"

He squeezed her tight. "No, I get that. You gotta do what you gotta do. Worlds don't just save themselves. I just... I wish you'd reconsider the whole 'backup' thing."

"Someone has to compensate for you not being around," he remarked.

Mel looked a bit uncomfortable. "Well there's this great Waffle shop over in Alexandria and then... well home," she lied.

"I'll be fine," Mel promised. "You just got to trust me."

"Does that mean you're going to go on patrol for me now?" Mel joked.

Zuko made a face. "I think it'd be boring if you're not around to complain to."

"You found it boring when I was around to complain to," Mel pointed out. "Now you won't have me trying to smack you in the head."

Sokka sighed. "All right," he lied. "I will." He leaned in to kiss her, softly.

"I'm sure Katara would be happy to," he pointed out, well aware that she wouldn't be for much longer.

The question he should've asked, and he knew it, was 'How the hell are you planning to get home?' but he also knew, as they all did now, that there were ways; Willow had managed it once.

What came out instead was, "By yourself?"

Mel leaned in and held on to Sokka maybe a little tighter than normal, clinging on to him like she might not ever see him again.
