Luke's Diner, May 14 (Wednesday)

When Lacey found the new flyer tacked to the bulletin board, she promptly developed a Plan. Oh yes. This plan, as any Dog River resident of recent years would tell you, was a Lacey Plan and thus came with an ominous metaphorical fanfare.

Oh, but there weren't any other Dog River residents here. More's the pity. So Lacey, as she re-hung poster frames and knickknacks on the freshly painted walls and took things down off the walls she had yet to do, was going full steam ahead with said plan.

Today's Specials
Lumberjack's Breakfast
Jumbo-sized plate of eggs, bacon, ham, sausages and pancakes
Write a short essay on why prairie dogs are better than squirrels, get a free fruit tart!

Luke's is open, and you know what they say about the best-laid plans? This isn't even remotely one of those, but at least Lacey put up the Help Wanted sign today.

[OOC: Man, I get way too much mileage out of the keysmash icon this week, hee. Still got that one available Monday or Wednesday shift, now with IC advertising.]

The squirrels had gotten their wee little paws on radio equipment (served the pirate right for not locking up before he fled) and were outside the diner playing Squirrels (http://dmdb.org/lyrics/squirrels.html) over and over and over again.

At least until their wee attention spans wore out.

Johnny came in sometime after class, not in any hurry to get back to the Photo Hut. He sat down at the counter and waited until he had the pretty lady's attention.

"Just a Coke, thanks, and... possibly a job?" Johnny asked.

"I'll never burn myself. If there's ever a fire? I can put it out instantly without damage to your property," he said because that was important, right? "I can make a fairly decent milkshake. And I enjoy working with the public." Truer words never spoken.

Johnny blinked, then grinned wide. "Wednesday? I think I'm about done working at the Photo Hut. Manager left a long time ago."

Chuckling over the three straws, he nodded. "Yep. In fact, I should be there now but I detoured on my way back from class. I think my talents can be better served in a diner. One can only take pictures of one self for so long, know what I mean?" Because aside from that and reading motocross weekly, that's about all he did. Tended to get boring after awhile.

On his way to check out the gallery, Murdock spotted the specials sign in the window. His stomach immediately reminded him that he'd skipped breakfast. Time to fix that.

"Hi!" he greeted as he walked in. "I'll take the special. And the essay part. How long does it have to be?"

"We'll see how it goes. All depends upon how inspired my muse gets. I hope you have plenty of napkins. Just in case." Muses were fickle things just ask his mun and you could never tell when they'd OD you.

"Hey, thanks! Probably better than napkins, though I'm sure I could've made 'em work." He settled himself on a stool and began digging through his jacket pockets. "Aww, man. I don't seem to a have pen. Got some animal crackers though." He looked back up at Lacey. "Hard to write with the little buggers, though. Crumbs everywhere."

"Yah," he agreed. "Especially without milk. They're best for eating anyway."

He thought for a minute, just staring at the notepad, then turned back to Lacey. "Let me ask ya; why are you curious to know why prairie dogs are better than squirrels? Don't you like squirrels?"

He's still new, and therefore hasn't made the connection between Lacey and the squirrels. Go easy on him.

"Squirrels do that? Dang. And here I thought they just threw nuts. And drink rum. What's that all about anyway? Whoever heard of intoxicated squirrels?"

A small piece of yellow notepaper with a drawing of a stick figure in something that vaguely looked like a helicopter with no body (just rotors and a seat) appeared on the bulletin board.
