Luke's Diner, June 9 (Monday)

. . . see, Lacey had had this whole idea to go out over the weekend and spend some time catching some rays on the beach in Bali Hai.

Which had, in and of itself, been a fantastic idea. Except for the part where she'd accidentally brought along a bottle of conditioner instead of sunscreen, so as a result there was a very forlorn-looking, very bright red Lacey shuffling painfully about the diner today.

Luke's is open, and OH MY GOD GIANT LOBSTER GIANT LOBSTER GI -- oh. That's just Lacey holding a pair of salad tongs in each hand.

Murdock was working on a routine. And Mondays meant a drop by the diner to visit Lacey.

He was smiling right up until he got a good look at her.

"Ouch."

"Uh huh. Hi, Murdock." Lacey couldn't possibly be any more red than she already was, but blushing anyway.

"What on earth did you do to yourself? Man, that's gotta hurt." Just call him Captain Obvious.

"A suntanning experiment gone horribly wrong?" Lacey offered.

"Maybe you should swing by the clinic and get that looked at?" he suggested gently. "You at least have something for it, right?"

"Yes?" By which Lacey meant a few drops left in the bottom of a bottle of aloe. "I'll stop by after work."

"Okay. As long as you're taking care of it." He didn't quite believe her, but he wasn't going to say that out loud.

"Anything I can help you with?" Because it did look pretty painful.

"Short of rewinding the weekend so I bring the sunscreen next time?" Lacey asked wistfully. "Not really."

"Yah, sorry. Ain't had much of a chance to work on my time machine lately," he grinned. "It's on my to do list right under 'build spaceship'."

"Well, when you do, let me know," Lacey said, humoring him. He wasn't serious about that time machine thing, right? Right?

[OOC: No worries, in and out of meetings today myself. Augh.]

"I sure will," he grinned again. Time machines were a little far-fetched even for him. Maybe. He'd have to think about it. Definitly going for the spaceship, though.

"How'd you like France?"

"Oh, France." Lacey made an expansive gesture that she instantly regretted. "It was fantastic. I owe you one for making me go, you know."

The initial plate of cream puffs she'd made with that intent had been eaten, though, so she reached beneath the counter and (with no small amount of grimacing) pulled out a large, frosty, very chocolatey cake in a tasteful display dish. Atop the chocolate frosting was the French flag done backwards (don't tell Lacey that) in more icing, and Thank you, Murdock! underneath in cursive icing writing.

Too bad she had to put the dish down on the counter with a little less delicacy than she'd have liked, but it was heavy and ow ow ow.

"Naw," he waved at her, "You don't owe..." He stopped mid-sentence as Lacey pulled out the cake and just stared at it a moment. "Oh. Wow. I...don't know what to say." If she looked real close, she might have noticed him turning slightly red. "Thank you."

He cringed a bit as the tray hit the counter a bit hard. "You sure you okay?"

Everything looked kind of red to Lacey, honestly, thanks to the sunburn, and anyhow she was a liiiiiiiiiiiiittle obtuse that way sometimes.

"I'll be fine," she assured him, less than convincingly. "Is it too much? I hope it's not too much."

He eyed her a minute, thinking 'yah. sure you are', then turned back to the cake. "Well...I like chocolate. And it's not really too much. And I'm flattered. Really." She made him a whole cake. Dang. He was really flattered. "Except it's kinda big for just one guy. Especially skinny ones like me. So I reckon you'll just have to share it with me," he grinned.

Lacey tried not to think about the pain involved in trying to eat anything right about now, and indulged in a few moments of internal flailing. "I'm really not hungry," she demurred. "You could share it with your friends?"

He seemed to deflat a little. "I guess I could do that." When, where or how he didn't have a clue. "I'll save some for ya?" he offered.

Lacey noticed the deflation and hurriedly burst out, "Aw, Murdock, that's sweet of you. If you really, really want, I'll have some."

It would be very ginger, bird-like eating, though.

"You don't have to have any right now," he quickly amended. "I can just save you a piece and bring it by for you some other time." He didn't want to make her do anything she didn't want to.

"You could probably use a break, Lacey. Why don't you sit for a bit?" Oww, did that look painful. Probably why she kept cringing and all.

Whoever put up a picture of a lobster today? SO FIRED if Lacey ever figures out who it was.

. . . yeah, I have no idea. Um.

I am DYING at Lacey's predicament. DYING I SAY. And I don't know why except I CAN RELATE.

Dude, I am having such a weird kind of bad morning, I had to do something weird. :D

If it says anything about what kind of day I've had, every time I refreshed this page it made me giggle.
