Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 06/16 ]

Chad figured that it was probably a good thing that the island appeared to have moved again last night, but he would miss that pretty amazing storm over the volcano. Still, he got some pictures of it for Teddy and it had inspired a bit of a still-in-progress attempt at a piece on his guitar, so it was all good.

Oh, yeah. The threat of not being covered in lava was pretty good, too. Chad kicked back and played his guitar a bit, expecting a pretty relaxing evening at the shop.

He might just talk back.

Johnny didn't know Chad was working when he came in, so he was pleasantly surprised to see him. "Dude! You wanna see something cool?"

It was kind of hard to want to turn down a set-up like that. Chad's head tilted at Johnny a little before he shrugged. "Sure."

Grinning, he reached back into his back pocket and pulled out a pair of drumsticks; they were blue with orange, red, and yellow flames all over them.

"Watch this," he said and stepped back, and with one in each hand, he lit up his hands and in turn the sticks. Flaming sticks. God, it was totally awesome and Johnny still was in awe of what Reed had managed.

"What do you think?"

Chad's response was a little delayed, but it was definitely not questionable once it came around.

"...Whoa. You just get those?"

"I've had them for a few days, testing them out," he said, twirling them in his fingers. "I've been practicing a bit."

"...Have you practised with them on an actual set yet?" Chad wondered, giving a slow glance toward the set at the back of the store. He considered the fire hazards involved if he hadn't and it turned out that it was all just a really bad idea.

"I purchases a pretty cheap and have been going at it in my room. I can keep the fire contained to my hands and the sticks, so there's no concern there if you're wondering about that. But," he paused, considering the flaming sticks. "If I get good enough, I might see about Reed checking into a set for me, flame proof it..."

"Don't want to go too overboard," Chad pointed out. "But maybe, like, the rims and stuff would be pretty cool. Not going to do much good with just bassist and a drummer, though. I gotta get on that audition thing."

"Yeah, I'd let Reed mess with that," he nodded, extinguishing the flames. "You need help with that, let me know. I might be kind of interested in getting something going, you know?"

"Yeah, me, too. I miss playing on stage, you know? I just...can't get myself around to actually starting something..."

"I know what you mean, but," he shrugged, "kind of this thing I like doing now. Aside from everything else, I feel pretty good, trying to teach myself something new."

"Yeah? You really think you're picking it up, then, huh?"

Johnny shrugged again. "Something like that. I mean, if it just becomes another hobby then I'll be good with it. Getting confident enough to play in front of other will no doubt take time and work... but, maybe."

[I know. Geeze. Bellsouth is overnighting a new one. Yay! Besides, I bought The Poisonwood Bible today to occupy myself. You made me want to read it! ;D]

"Maybe," Chad grunted and, if anyone was paying particular attention, they might have noticed a grin. "Best way to get over maybe is jus' to do it."

He noticed and he grinned back. "I'm trying man, I'm trying."

"Cool," Chad nodded. "You come in to use the set today, or just to show off the sticks?"

"Both... if you don't mind?"

"Nah, of course not; want to just have at it yourself, or would you be interested in a bit of a jam?" Chad glanced meaningfully over toward where his guitar was.

"I'd enjoy a little jam session, Chad," Johnny replied and with a sure foot, headed off towards the back where the drum set was. "Haven't totally found myself with the music yet, so bare with me, all right?"

"Yeah, of course," Chad said, taking a hold of his guitar's neck and drifting over to the back of the store; once there, he slung its strap over his broad shoulders and plucked a few strings to check how it was tuned. "What sort of thing you in the mood for?"

Johnny made himself comfortable behind the set. "I don't know. How about you start up with something and I'll join in, see where that takes us?"

Chad grunted his nodding agreement and then took a moment to consider what he might be feeling. Then he started, plucking out something quick and steady, on the low range. After a few measures in his head, the scale moved up, just slightly higher, still low and rumbling, although most things on a bass would be.

Johnny didn't flame up the sticks as he began to play; it really wasn't called for right now anyway. He was simply trying to get the beat and drum out something that seemed to work all right with what Chad was playing. So far, so good.

The beat remained steady and quick as Chad played on, carefully considering how Johnny was picking up on it as he counted his beats. Reaching the same as before, he hiked up the tone a bit again. When the measures added up to another hike, though, Chad went back down, instead of up, and then shifted his gaze toward Johnny to catch any reactions, even if subtle, to the drop.

It was hard, he wasn't going to act like sitting here and trying to keep up with the beat and the shift in tone was easy; it wasn't, and he glanced towards Chad when the change was noticable, adjusting as best he could to keep moving, even if the next few hits were a bit off, making the entire mix seem awkward for a moment.

Chad expected that, really, and a grin might have been caught again if Johnny wasn't so focused on the drumming. The fact that Johnny had picked up on the shift was the important part, after all. He continued on a bit more, and then shifted up again when the beats called for it.

He didn't notice the grin; he was concentrating on the drums before him now, listening to Chad, listening to the beats, listening to the hits he made in time with the tune Chad'd set. It was mind-engrossing, really, awesome in its own right, but Johnny knew nothing short of dedication would have him playing better, and with more control.

Chad's next measure brought him up a second time, playing along and letting Johnny feel it out, but he did drop it down again after that second increase

And he was waiting just for that, almost tense in the way he sat there, the sticks held easy, but Johnny was waiting for the change because he was almost certain Chad was going to bring it. When he did, this time he was ready and the beats of the drum followed readily, in time, and in tune.

Johnny flashed Chad a quick grin if he was looking.

"Nice one," Chad complimented. "You picked up on the switches."

Now he'd see if Johnny would pick up on the fact that Chad was slowly increasing the pace, subtly. He was almost certain Johnny would follow. Whether he did it blindly or he realized that Chad was rushing were two different things.

"Thanks man," he said, still with the grin.

Biting his lip, he relaxed his shoulders and arms, feeling more confident that he could do this, that he could follow along and actually play with Chad. That's not to say that he could play worth anything, he really couldn't, but he was working on it and little by little he was doing better, following better by sound and feel alone. He wondered what Chad was thinking as the beats to the drums increased with the rising tempo of Chad's playing.

"I can tell you've been practising..."

Not really; it had been way too long since the last time they did this for Chad to remember something like that, but he thought the encouragement might help Johnny out.

"Can you?" his smile was wide. "I have been so that's great. I should come in here more, you know? Play with you if you can spare the time; better that way because I get a better feel for the rhythm."

"Definitely," Chad nodded. "Bassist and drummer, they gotta have a connection. They're the backbone of any song, you know. That's why Teal Dear kicked so much ass. Pippi an' me had that...you know...groove."

"Groove," he nodded. "I'd like to find that and keep it."

"Definitely on the way, man," Chad said. "Definitely. I'm here Mondays and Fridays, too, and I almost always bring my guitar."

"Then I'll stop by and if you feel like jamming, I'd appreciate it, if not, maybe you wouldn't mind if I just practiced on my own? The set I purchased really is kind of crappy."

"Yeah, man, I told you. Whenever you want. But if you want to start pulling out the flames, no setting the place on fire. That's my only rule."

"Not to worry, seriously, Chad. I can control fire better than I can control anything."

You don't even need to watch out for kittens underfoot, as Prince Oscar Pedro is still so freaked out about that storm that he's hiding underneath the counter and refusing to move.

Oh, day off *flops comfortably on you*
