The pond in the park, all day

Overnight, there had been a sudden cold snap which froze the pond, creating a slick, glassy surface, just perfect for ice skating (and skates were handwavily available nearby).

One end of it was already filled with wee dancing penguins. It's okay, they're happy to share the ice.

The sun was up, making for a bright yet cool day, and the ice showed no inclination to melt.

For skating and penguins.

The squirrels were not pleased about the change in weather (don't ask where they had found wee squirrel-sized scarves, just...don't), but they were happy to see the pond freeze over. Maybe it would mean the end of their arch nemeses, the ducks!

...Though the new birds were kind of cute. After a few moments of staring, the squirrels were soon dancing along and offering to share their rum.

Savannah was still dealing with all of the emotions and thoughts she had -- and thinking about the talks with Isabel and Summer. However, when she saw the penguins in the park, she had to sit and watch them.

Jaina had been braving the cold to get some things done before the weekend, but stopped when she saw the penguins doing a conga line around the pond. And then promptly made a call.

"I think you need to go dance with them," John said a little breathlessly, having hauled himself down to the park quickly so as not to miss this event.

"I think you should get that petting done while you can," Jaina grinned. "You made it."

"Thanks to you," John reached to sling an arm over her shoulder. "They seem friendly, huh?"

That was more comfortable. "They're so cheerful. I'm surprised they haven't burst out into song."

"It's almost disturbing that they're dancing and not singing," John decided.

"Maybe they don't have the right sort of vocal chords," she said. "Sort of like how just because certain species have music, you really don't want to hear it."

"Now that I didn't know," John admitted, eyes transfixed by the dancing creatures. "I wonder if any of those species are in Fandom."

"Hopefully not," she said, glancing up at him. "Maybe Jolee has some Wookiee music lying around to torture you with. I mean, listen to."

"It's really that bad?" John was mentally aligning it to Vogon poetry set to music.

"Could be much worse," she admitted, sliding her arm around his waist. "You can smile and nod through it."

"So there's no need to cover your ears and pray for it to end?"

"Maybe at first, but it gets monotonous enough that you get used to it pretty quick."

"Maybe I should work on getting my hands on some." His ideas were sometimes scary.

"Or you can call my grandfather and see if he has some," she said helpfully.

"Is he a big music fan?" John asked. "Or are you just hoping I'll cringe and make faces?"

"He plays stuff from home during his office hours sometimes," Jaina said. "For a while I thought he was hoping it would calm me down so I potentially wouldn't start yelling about something."

"I take it that tactic didn't work?" John asked, amused at the idea.

"No. Never. It's astonishingly easy to yell at him sometimes," she admitted, watching a penguin do a very impressive little tap move.

John didn't know how that went at all. "Are we sure these penguins aren't students?"

"I don't think our students are that talented," Jaina said immediately.

John laughed and leaned in to speak quietly. "You may have a point there, but I wouldn't say so loudly."

"I live on the edge," she smiled up at him.

John had gotten a call and had headed down to witness the amazing dancing penguins. And potentially pet one.

For penguins and skating.

This had to be the weirdest July ever. Francine didn't even pack winter clothes, since she didn't know if she'd be staying here for the school year or not. Still, the minute she'd heard there were penguins around, she had to head out to look for them.

Her heaviest rainy-weather jacket with a towel tucked into it for a scarf would be warm enough for a while, right?

Hinata couldn't help but come and watch the penguins, and wondering, idly, if she dared to try skating. It couldn't be that hard, right?

There's still skating, and probably still penguins, but there's also braziers, glowing warm and red, scattered around the pond area, and hot drinks - spiced cider and chocolate and mulled wine, amongst others - available.

After closing up his office, Murdock cut through the park on his way to the hotel. The skating penguins caught his eye and he wandered over to watch them for a while, taking a seat on the grass.

1) Penguins are awesome.
2) I really, really want hot spiced cider.
3) Now I stop spamming the flist.

Ooh, know what I want? Starbucks caramel apple cider. It's so my warm weather drink.

Ignore that I've had to sleep with a fan on this week.
