Luke's Diner, July 7 (Monday)

Unless you happened to be walking past the diner at the right times today, to all appearances it was being manned by the latest issue of Tidings magazine and the fingertips that held it up. If you didn't happen by at the right time, you would have to walk into the diner and behind the counter to find Lacey on the other side of said magazine, staring with sad, plaintive eyes at a rave review of a new upscale restaurant in Toronto and heaving the occasional woeful sigh.

It was the kind of quasi-private woe that explained the general listlessness of the specials board today.

Today's Specials
Soup
Sandwiches
Burgers

Luke's is open, but having a bit of a self-esteem crisis today.

"Hey Lacey!" Murdock bounded up to the counter and leaned elbows onto it. "Whatcha readin'?"

"Huh? Report card? Since when are you takin' classes?" Confusion; champion of breakfasts.

"Um..." he glanced over the article, "it looks nice?" He wasn't quite sure how to respond here, and it showed.

"Oh." Now he was getting it. Somebody was possibly a wee bit jealous. "What's so wrong with that? Less pressure, more relaxing, less cranky customers pesterin' ya... Okay; maybe not so much with that last part. I've met some pretty cranky folks 'round here. But still," he grinned, "it's nice and quiet."

He probably wasn't helping very much.

"Ah," he nodded, as if that made all the sense in the world. "Why would you need to rate a Zagat? What the heck's a Zagat anyway? Fancy kitchen equipment?"

"Quiet is nice," he countered. "Very nice. Don't you like quiet? I do." This coming from a man who could barely keep his mouth shut at the best of times.

"So...you just need a rating?" He considered this for a long moment. "Then I give you five stars! No; wait. Ten! A millionzillion stars! I'll even make it official." He dug a pen out of a pocket, and began writing on a napkin.

Luke's Diner
Lacey Burrows
Rating: millionzillion stars
Signed: HM Murdock, Inspector No. 6

"There you go," he grinned, proudly handing it over. "All rated."

He grinned as he finally managed to get a smile out of her. Some could be singleminded in attaining self-pity; it was Murdock's singleminded goal to pull those people out of said state. Except when it applied to himself.

"Awww, Lacey," he smirked back. "Did I succeed? Mission accomplished an' all that?" Elbows back on the counter, he leaned forward a bit. "No more sad puppy eyes?" Which he then demonstrated his own, innocently blinking up at her, frowning just a touch despite the obvious grin underneath.

"No," he grinned, "You look more like this." And tried to do his best Lacey-depressed-but-not-going-to-act- depressed-act, complete with small wistful sigh.

Perhaps he's been hanging around the diner a bit too much.

"Well..." he grinned, "probably not exactly, but pretty darn close. Now," he eyed her carefully, "Are you still gonna fret over some silly rating or am I gonna have to keep doin' bad impressions?"

"Ooh, pie! That could be pretty distractin'. But I doubt you'll be able to get away with frettin'," he winked. "I'm just all observant like that." Sometimes. Maybe. Usually only when he was working a mission. Otherwise...not so much.

"Awww, c'mon," he whined just a touch. "Don't be all pouty. I hate to see pretty girls pouty. Pouty girl does not a pretty girl make. I made that up," he grinned.

Hey! Pie!

Huh. That wasn't good. Underneath the poster, scrawled on a napkin appeared this. (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o192/lttledvl_photos/fandom%20murdock/Everything-Will-Be-OK.jpg)
