Extra shift. What the hell. Might as well stop in, drink a little, pick up some extra cash, right?

Tropical drinks, with those little funky umbrellas, on special, for the fact that they were somewhere warm again. Good deal.

Caritas was open.

By following a path of X's from his office toward his house, Tyler had found three more little chests of chocolate treasure, none of which he would eat. Shrugging, he decided to take them to the bar. Maybe he could leave them in the lounge there.

"Faith!" he greeted the bartender. "So would you eat chocolate somebody buried under a park bench?"

It was probably not the classiest offer Faith had ever received.

"Tyler," she grinned, nodding to him. "Depends. It still in the wrapper? I've eaten worse."

Well, she had.

He waved a chocolate coin before her as if to hypnotize her. "Not only is it wrapped, this shit is wrapped in gold. I dunno, somebody was burying trunks of it all over the island. I figured I'd leave it here for anybody who wanted it."

"Can I see?" Faith asked, holding her hand out. "Wonder if somebody drugged it. Poisoned it, or whatever. You'd think they'd leave it out, though, with a big freakin' sign. FREE CANDY. Not just bury it under park benches."

Tyler dropped the coin in her hand. "Drugged it, poisoned it, dumped in the litterbox instead of Rice Krispies," he cataloged. "I used to work food service, and now I don't eat anything I didn't see made. Though the pirate chest is kind of cute."

"It was in a chest?" she laughed. "Man, someone got real bored."

Faith unwrapped the coin, sniffing it lightly. "Seems fine to me," she said. "You care if I try it?"

"Either that, or we got an invasion of very friendly pirates," he noted, then gestured for her to keep the chocolate. "Be my guest. I found a bunch of chests full."

She took a nibble out of one side of it, nodding. "Tastes fine to me," she said, shrugging almost sheepishly. "Poor kid. So long as it ain't spoiled, it's food."

She popped the rest of the coin into her mouth. "Maybe the pirates are gonna come back, real confused that someone found their chocolate," she suggested. "Never know around this place, right?"

"My first job when I left home was waiting tables for banquets, night work," Tyler told her, shrugging back. "Dozen years later, and I still can't get past what I saw people do. Kind of wrecks my appetite."

"A lot," he added thoughtfully, "of bored and disturbed people end up in night work. No offense."

"None taken," Faith smirked, licking a stray bit of chocolate from her fingers. "I try not to think about what people do to food when I'm not lookin'. And I don't hit places regular if I don't tip."

She raised an eyebrow. "You think I'm bored or disturbed?"

"I tip," he told her, "very well." Which Faith should know, really. "That reminds me, can I have a beer? Whatever you like."

He looked a little amused. "Wouldn't have bothered with the 'no offense' if I did."

"I can't decide if I'm relieved or disappointed," she laughed, grabbing a mug and heading over to the tap. "I was puttin' more money on 'disturbed' than 'bored.'"

"I may not be the person to ask," Tyler laughed in return. "You like a fight, but I think the people who never wanna fight are the disturbed ones. Repressed."

"Repressed ain't always the same as disturbed," she countered, returning with his beer and handing it to him. "Some of us are plenty disturbed, we just let it wander around and say hi to people."

"Well, that's the fun way to be disturbed," Tyler answered, taking a sip. "At least, until the part you've been letting wander around goes a little too far and plain old you has to clean up after it."

he was probably saying too much, but he didn't care.

"Yeah," Faith said, lifting her own drink and knocking a little of it back. "Yeah, that's ... the shitty part, isn't it? When you gotta suck it up and be responsible and crap like that."

Ah, jail. Memories.

He nodded in silent agreement. "You just have to hope the rest of the ride is worth it," he told her, then gave an apologetic shrug. "Sorry. Try to bring a girl chocolate, and I start talking about crap no one really needs to think about."

It was possible there were reasons Tyler was not an astounding success with women.

"Girl still got her chocolate," Faith grinned. "Girl's doin' fine. I think it's the bartendin' thing. I hear lots of shit, you know? Somethin' about a counter and liquor makes people wanna talk."

He smiled. "Occupational hazard, huh? Glad to contribute."

Curious, he asked, "So you like what you do?"

"I really do," Faith said, smiling. "I mean, first it was just ... there's the free booze and gettin' to laugh at drunk people, and you always find someone interesting to take home. But it's kinda ... people open up a little, when they're drinking. It's neat hearin' what they have to say. Maybe you can even help, sometimes. Like the kid who's tryin' to drown himself in that bottle, or ..."

She shook her head. "That sounds dumb, don't it?"

Lounge.

Faith's snagging the Monday shift until Caritas gets a new bartender -- if you have a current/potential character interested in the spot, contact Jolee-mun.
