Turtle & Canary; Saturday [ 07/26 ]

Turtle was a little sad that her duties to open the store today prevented her from really checking out the RoboCon that was going on, however she had a very clever solution. It was simply to give Liz the day off; as a robot herself, Liz the security dog would not only benefit, but she had recording equipment and could come back to Turtle with some information on how things went. Just a few minor adjustments in the programming, and off Liz went.

She did feel bad, however, that she couldn't give the SquishyBot the day off for the convention, too. She'd admit that part of it was the fact that the idea of not having Squishies for a day was a little terrifying, but, really, it mostly had to do with the fact that the SquishyBot was kind of rooted to one spot, not in the least bit mobile unless you counted moving arms and eyes, which wouldn't get her anyway.

Sharon entered the store and came straight to the counter. "Excuse me," she said politely, "are you the manager?"

It was the sort of question that brought a serenely pleased smile to Turtle's face before she answered. "Why, yes," she said, "that would be me. Turtle Wexler, nice to meet you. How can I be of service to you today?"

"I'm Athena," Sharon said. "I'm here for the convention, and I'd like to buy some things to take home with me, but I don't have any of your local currency. Will you take cubits (http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Cubit)?"

Considering how often Turtle had dealt with money from other worlds and dimensions, this was certainly not a problem. She gave a slight nod. "Of course! I'll just have to call the bank up real quick and find out a conversion rate; they're extremely resourceful for that sort of thing."

There might actually be a problem with that, as the cubit had been essentially totally devalued by the, you know, apocalypse, but Sharon just said, "Right, okay, I'll wait."

Maybe the bank wouldn't know about the apocalypse yet.

Well, it was Fandom, and it turns out that there had been, throughout time and dimensions, several different units of both currency and measurement involving cubits, so, though Turtle frowned a bit at the consideration of the money when she called the bank, she figured she'd work around it. Maybe if Athena was looking to buy, like, a thousand dollars worth of magnets, there might be a problem, but, as it was...

"We're good," she told her. "Athena, right? I remember your name from my radio notes last night; you're here for the convention, right?"

She didn't actually want any magnets. Every coffee bean in the place that hadn't been decaffeinated, on the other hand...

"Yes," Athena told her. "That's right. I'm a Cylon. So, okay, can I just get my stuff and we'll figure it out then?"

Turtle had no idea what a Cylon was; she was just thinking it was cool to have a robot in her store. She nodded. "Yup, that sounds good. And you get a special discount, too, since...well, I assume, if you're here for the convention, that being a Cylon means you're robotic in some way?"

"That's right," Athena said, without getting into how she was a robot. "A discount would be...amazing. Excuse me. I'll be right back."

Then she grabbed a cart and started trolling the aisles, going for generics when she could to stretch a cubit farther. Things you couldn't get in the Fleet any more for love nor money: coffee (lots of that), tampons and maxipads, condoms, over-the-counter painkillers, multivitamins, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm. New underwear and socks, several bars of chocolate (to be shared out among the other female pilots), two large packs of the nice toilet paper, and every bag of those little lollipops she could find.

"Okay, look," she said to Turtle. "I probably can't afford all of this but just...let me dream for a minute and then I'll figure out what has to go back. I have to get the suckers. Those are for my husband."

Turtle couldn't help herself; she was just far too used to people just getting small piles of stuff they needed rather than the whole lexicon of supplies. She blinked a little at the cart before looking at Athena and commenting, "You...do realize that this convention's just for a weekend, right?"

Normally, she wouldn't say anything, and just ring up the mighty sale, but since money was questionable.

"Yes. This is for dragging home with me," Athena told her. "We have a scarcity issue." That was putting it mildly.

Turtle drew in a deep breath, shaking her head. "Good luck importing all that through customs," she said, but, dutifully, started scanning through everything. They could handle the particulars of the money thing when they got to it. She had to admit, if Athena felt the need to stock up on this much stuff, she kind of felt bad. It would definitely be a good deed on her part, a bit of karma going her way, if she sort of overlooked some of the finer financial details for this one case.

So long as it didn't turn out that all the robots had scarcity issues.

Although it was interesting to think that a robot needed tampons, contraceptives, and multivitamins, but she wasn't going to ask. Maybe they weren't all robots.

Once it was all scanned, Turtle pulled out a small pad of paper and a calculator and did up some figures. "Okay," she said, "I'm not sure how much you have, but, according to the conversion and with the discount, everything comes out to ~~handwavey~~ cubits."

Galactica's pilots had taken up a collection when they figured out Athena might be going somewhere that had actual honest-to-gods coffee, and the number Turtle quoted suggested they were dealing with pre-apocalypse currency values here, but when she counted off her bundle of worn banknotes, she still didn't quite have enough. "Okay, then take off the lip balm and the socks. And...half of the bottles of vitamins. Frak."

Turtle paused her bagging of the items a moment to wave a dismissive hand. Still, a hesitation came before she said anything, quickly reassuring herself that part of being an excellent business(wo)man was making a few allowances for the sake of your reputation. True, if she was here for just the convention, that was a good chance that she'd never encounter anyone who could potentially hear about her gracious heart, but any publicity was good publicity, really, and, around here, you never closed off any possibility.

"Don't worry about it. It's close enough. I'll give you a little extra discount that'll cover the difference."

"Seriously?" Athena broke into a wide grin. "Thank you, thank you so much. This is going to make a lot of people very happy, you have no idea."

With a response like that, Turtle really couldn't help grinning back. "It sounds like it's going to a place that needs it, so, yeah, don't mention it," she said, finding that her attempt to be modest about it left her blushing a little. "I'm glad I could help."

"I want a Squishy!!!" Gir demanded, hopping onto the counter. "I WANT A SQUISHY!!!"

"Whoa there, little guy!" Turtle said, eyes widening at the demand. "No need to get pushy, you can have one. Well, you can buy one, anyway. You have money?"

Gir popped the top of his head open and rummaged around inside, coming up with a paperclip, a ball of lint, a five-dollar bill, and three plastic Army men. "Is that enough?"

Turtle stared a little; she figured someone popping their head open warranted a little bit of staring. She gingerly reached for the five-dollar bill. "This'll cover it," she said. "You could actually get a few Squishies with this much," she added, suggesting that he perhaps consider it. Maybe he had some robot friends he could share a few with. Or maybe he could manage to gulp them all down. Maybe his head was refrigerated and could store them well. Never knew unless you suggestive sold.

"YAAAAY!!! OKAY!!!" Gir happily got one of each flavor and stuck two of them inside his head (don't ask how they'd actually manage to fit) while he sucked happily on the Pine Fresh. "Are you here for the convention???" he asked Bob.

Bob, who had no way to really answer that, lacking a voice program, simply continued to watch the little robot with her eyes.

"She's a permanent fixture here," Turtle explained for her. "Don't know what I'd do without her."

"You'd be doin' like this!" Gir announced, and then he started mimicking Turtle's movements as best as he could.

"...but I'm doing that with her still here," Turtle pointed out, frowning at the little guy as she started to realize what he was doing. "So, no matter what, you're saying I'd do the same thing?"

"But I'm doin' that with her still here!!!" Gir replied, frowning. "So, no matter what, you're sayin' I can have a taco?"

"I...didn't say anything about tacos..."

"I did!" Gir replied proudly, as he took another sip of his Squishy. "YAAAAY tacos!!!!"

Okay, Turtle thought she had a good idea that this might have been the excitable robot who didn't make much sense in her radio notes last night, either. She couldn't think of anything she might have to say to that, so she didn't, and continued just eying the thing oddly.

Chunk of unavailability in the afternoon, but otherwise around!
