Unfortunately for Jen (or fortunately, depending on how you looked at it), she'd discovered a book on police procedures from the mid-twentieth century and hadn't been able to put it down since yesterday; she was leaning against the counter at the pizza parlor, nose buried in the book and hardly paying attention to a thing around her.

She hadn't paid attention to the fact that she came into work only an hour late honest!, either -- she'd be ashamed of herself later, when she realized that.
