The Beach, Saturday Morning

Mohinder had been exploring ever since he got up, and that was a really long time ago. He'd gotten all the way to the beach from - well that probably didn't matter, because he wasn't lost at all. There had been a kangeroo, though it had startled away when he'd tried to take a picture and now there was sand and water all the way over there.

Mohinder carefully set down his backpack, and struggled out of his shoes before he headed to the water's edge. He stood as close as he could, staring at the water, and jumped backwards, giggling and wet-footed, as a wave caught him.

She shook her head. "I had it right!"

"Are you playing some game I came in late for?" she asked, still being friendly.

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Who would want to play games about the Federation?" Juli asked, confused.

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I'm not playing the game so I'd have to ask you," she pointed out.

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
She crossed her arms.

"Then what in the world are you talking about?"

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm telling the truth," Juli insisted. "'Bout the planets, and the Federation, and the beaches. I'm not a liar."

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't say you were a liar," Abby insisted. "Just that perhaps you're confused. I'm well aware there are planets, and that there are constellations and that someone with too much money and too little sense might make a beach."

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
"I know there's constellations," Juli said, frowning. "That's not what I said though. The Federation rules the planets and the constellations."

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
"The only one who rules the planets and the constellations is God," she said with a faint smile.

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"God only exists in stories from Lost Jerusalem. Science is what rules everything," she said stubbornly.

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
She looked scandalized.

"And only a fool thinks that God is not behind the Science that man discovers!"

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
"God sleeps on a planet that no one can find anymore," Juli said stubbornly. "If he even exists at all! It's men that rule with science!"

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Other men." With a good bit of duh there.

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"And who created the first man?"

Oh, there's too much 'duh' to even quantify in her reply.

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"They evolved," Juli said confidently. "From the animals."

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"And the animals came from?"

She was already grinning, just as confident.

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
"From the sea," she said. "Because that's where we came from before we ever made it to space, Mother says."

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
"And how did the sea make animals?"

Ha ha ha!

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Juli looked superior. "Through time," she said witheringly.

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
She snorted.

"Time? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Life had to have started somehow. You can't just take a sterile pad and wait and expect life to fill it. Life doesn't simply happen."

She lifted her head.

"Science certainly makes more sense than reading the Book like a history, but it doesn't explain everything."

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
"The only reason not everything makes sense yet is because we don't know the right questions to go looking for the answers to," Juli retorted. "Science can't explain nothing until we know what we're asking for. One day it'll explain everything and God won't even be a story."

[identity profile] brandyforapples.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Because Man will have taken credit for his work and explained it like a child claiming work he copied off another."

[identity profile] last-mizrahi.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"You can't copy work off someone that doesn't exist," Juli pointed out. "You have no proof of his existence."
