Caritas, Wednesday Night

Okay, of all the ways Fandom got weird on her ... the little-kid thing wasn't such a rough gig. She kinda liked it. She'd never admit it out loud. Had a rep to keep up.

"Were you a kid this weekend?" she asked Tino. "Bet you were cute."

Tino glared and didn't say anything. Like always.

If Snarf knew that his young charge had left the cabin and gone to a bar, he'd have a heart attack.

"Excuse me," said Lion-o. "Could I have a glass of milk, please?"

Faith was gonna stare for a minute.

Okay. Done staring.

"Milk," she said. "You betcha. Some milk, comin' right up."

It was Fandom, after all. The weird just kept coming.

"Thank you," said Lion-o, smiling at Faith. He was getting better at dealing with the staring.

"So you're a cat-thing," Faith said, handing him a glass of milk. "Check that out."

Tact wasn't ever going to be her strong suit.

"Yeah," said Lion-o with a shrug. "I come from a planet of cat-people, actually. I thought humans would take some getting used to."

"Probably do," she mused. "I mean, we gotta be weird for ... cat ... people. Right? We don't ... purr."

"And your nails are different," he added, showing Faith his hand. Lion-o's nails were more like claws, longish for a boy, and with sharp tips.

Still staring, here.

"Those'd be hell to get manicured," she managed.

"They come in handy, though," said Lion-o. "I never have problems opening plastic shrinkwrap."

"Point," Faith said, taking a swig from her drink. "So can you see real good in the dark and all that?"

"Uh huh," said Lion-o. "Only problem with that is that I seem to be getting more and more nocturnal."

"Getting?" Faith asked, raising an eyebrow. "This some kinda puberty deal?"

"It sure seems like it," said Lion-o. "It started just a few weeks ago, right before I turned 14."

"Ain't nothing wrong with being nocturnal," Faith shrugged. "Night owl myself. Kinda comes with the territory."

A couple more e-mails with Bruce this week and, really, Dick needed a drink. He was just trying to get an idea of whether or not he was going to actually be here or in Gotham for the start of school. Was that too much to ask? Apparently so.

"Hey," he said, taking a seat at the bar. "I'll have a Jack and Coke."

"Hey there," Faith nodded, grabbing a glass. "Rough day? I gotta ask. It's bartender law, or some shit."

"Rough week," Dick said. "Talking to people back home just doesn't seem worth the hassle sometimes."

"Fuck, I know that one." Faith shook her head. "There's people that don't got my number. And if they get it, I'm changing it."

"I can't really get away with that with this guy. He's my foster father," Dick said. "And he knows where I am, obviously, so he could still find a way to get in touch with me even if I tried that."

"That's a good thing?" Faith asked, lowering her voice. "If you need someone to kick his teeth in or whatever, I mean."

Faith's experience with father figures was kinda ... not so hot.

Dick laughed. He did his best to play it off as taking the threat as a comforting joke as opposed to imagining what would happen to someone if they tried to kick Bruce's teeth in.

"Thanks for the offer, but I don't think that's necessary," Dick said. "No, right now he's just too busy with some things to actually spare ten minutes to talk. But as soon as he has the time, you know he's going to expect me to drop everything."

"Sorry," Faith said, flushing. "I, uh. Just wanted to be sure. 'Foster dad' don't necessarily sound like ..."

She waved it off. "You tried tellin' him that? That you want to be higher on the list than the rest of his shit? Sometimes people don't hear that until you say it real loud."

"As far as foster parents go, I definitely ended up with a good one for the most part," Dick said. "But every now and then it just gets to be impossible to get through to him, you know? No matter how loud I say it. He just tends to be very focused on whatever it is he's doing and right now he's not focusing on parenting."

Faith nodded, frowning a little. "I know a girl. Sweet. Good kid. Mom's gone, so it's just her and big sister. Big sister's got too much going on to be there for her. Everything's more important than her. Granted, big sister's got a lot on her plate. Save the world, whatever. But that girl needs her, and she don't ever wanna hear it. Not sure she can."

"That sounds familiar," Dick said. He paused. "Is this one of those things where the girl is you and you're talking about your sister?"

That got a smile out of her. "Nah. I'm the fuck-up that told the girl, hey, could be worse. You could've had me for a big sister. And she said, that might not have been so bad. And I figured, hell, I can give it a shot. Worse that happens, I do such a bad job that she appreciates the real one, right?"

"Well, at least you have a built-in silver lining," Dick said. "And I have to say, you've done the code of the bartender proud. I have some alcohol and I feel better after talking about my troubles. That's a home run."
