Serenity Cove [Wednesday afternoon]

Kaylee was fully aware that there was a whole new section of the island to explore. That said, she was also aware that summer was dying down, and that it'd soon be too cold to really enjoy the parts of the island she already knew.

Which was why Wednesday afternoon found her getting some sun in her shiny new swimsuit. And because this is Kaylee, "getting some sun" did not involve lounging and tanning and reading a book so much as meticulously building a sandcastle that she could probably actually fit in herself. She was about halfway done, and she was just grateful she'd thought to bring her tools, honestly, because she had all kinds of ideas for acoutrements.

[open beach is open! this post is the product of me going "Omg that is the Kaylee-est bikini I've ever seen. I must post with it at some point," yes. because seriously. and yes it always said Serenity Cove and it never said ANYWHERE THAT DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE.]

Ned...did not have a swimsuit on. He thought he was being brave with just shorts and a t-shirt.

Of course, his clothing had nothing to do with why he'd stopped during his walk and was kind of staring in Kaylee's direction. The stopping was more due to the swimsuit.

The very, very nice swimsuit. He wasn't staring. He was...perusing.

Kaylee looked up from where she was carefully shaping a tower and waved happily. "Hi! Come help build!"

"What're you building?" Ned asked, slowly making his way over, kicking sand up as he went.

"A fortress," she declared excitedly, getting up and dusting some of the sand off herself. "Out of sand, so maybe not too effective-like, s'far as fortresses go, but still!"

"It's..." Ned finally tore his eyes from her to the sandcastle, "...big."

Mmm, eloquence.

"I could fit inside!" she said, nodding. "You might be a teeny touch too big."

At some point Kaylee was going to remember how little her swimsuit was.

"Probably a little," he said, looking back towards her and her...swimsuit. It was kinda nice. And little. "I can stand guard?"

"You could peek in through the doors'n windows, too," she said, now considering making the windows bigger so as to facilitate that. She kind of dismissed that for a second, though, because she had more important things to attend to. Such as stretching up on her very tiptoes to kiss his cheek. "You'd be a good guard."

"Because I'm so big?" he asked, smiling down at her.

"An' because you'll have a big wrench to hit intruders with," she said, nodding and gesturing to her little pile of tools.

"You built a sandcastle with tools?" He couldn't help laughing. "You're determined."

"Those are for addin' stuff," she said. "Mostly I used my hands. I wanted it to be a good sandcastle! I ain't never really made one before."

"I've never seen one like that before," he said. "It's really big. All of the ones that built were small."

"Well, I wanted to try an' get some sun before fall kicks in an' it goes away." And now Kaylee remembered what she was wearing, and she had the grace to blush as she said, "I got some new beach clothes I didn't wanna waste, too."

"I...see," he said, trying oh so very hard not to look even though he wanted to oh so very much.

She frowned, trying to figure out why he didn't seem to want to look at her. "I thought it was pretty. With the strawberries!" She pointed helpfully.

"It is," he said, quickly, nodding. "It's very...nice."

Oh, Ned. Grow a pair.

She looked down at herself, and back up at him, and it finally kinda clicked.

Because she was a moron, and hadn't gotten it before now.

"Just nice?"

"No, I said very," he said because that word was important. "Very nice."

"You don't think it's too small?"

Kaylee was a terrible person.

"Wha?" He was trying to be good and not look and that was just...mean. "No, it's...you sized!"

"It ain't too skimpy?"

Bad Kaylee. Very, very bad.

"It's...very nice," he said and suddenly his mouth was dry and he couldn't really talk very well at all.

She grinned. "Glad you think so. I was worried that it might show too much skin."

"It's...a bathing suit," he said, scrambling for words. "Isn't it supposed to?"
