'Round and 'round the park, Sunday afternoon

Not wanting to spend the better part of his day sitting inside and moping, Sam had decided to take Scout for an extra long walk. Scout seemed to sense Sam's need to be outside, away from his room and all the things that reminded him of Dawn, and was currently taking Sam on his third trip around the lake, searching for the perfect tree.

So far, Jess had seen the school and the dorms, and he was convinced there had to be more to the island than that. But as he walked around town, he realized there really wasn't much more than just that, at least not in terms of decent civilization. It was almost worse than being in Stars Hollow; at least there, his methods of escaping didn't involve having to cross water or some creepy causeway.

He was so deep in his thoughts that he might not have noticed the guy out walking his dog if he wasn't so freakishly tall. It wasn't until he got closer that he finally recognized him, and stopped in his tracks. It was bad enough that he'd had to listen to that obnoxious bus driver talk about Rory - he didn't even want to be in the same time zone as Dean Forester, let alone stuck on the same island as him. As he rounded the lake, Jess approached him with every intention to say something, but as he got up to him, he snapped, and just launched himself forward with the intention of knocking Dean down.

Sam was lost in his own thoughts too, to the point where he didn't register that someone was coming at him until he was already on the ground. That was when the Winchester instincts kicked in, and a punch to the gut and a flip later, he was perched on top of his attacker and trying to hold him down.

"Peter?" he said when he finally got a good look at him. "What the hell? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?"

Jess didn't know where the hell those rapid reflexes had come from, but he did know that he really wasn't fond of his current position, and he pushed to try to get up. "Get the hell off me!"

As Sam watched him struggle, little things started to fall into place, and some of the things he'd heard on last night's radio clicked. "You're not Peter."

"No, I'm not Peter," Jess said bitterly. That was going to get annoying very quickly if it kept up. "You of all people should know that. Now, are you gonna get up, or are we going to stay here like this and be awkward?"

Sam wasn't quite as concerned about the awkward positioning at the moment, since he had the upper hand. "That depends. Are you going to try to hit me again?"

Jess glared and tried to push himself up again. "I was thinking about it, but since you've suddenly become a ninja, I'm re-evaluating my plan."

Sam rolled his eyes and got up, offering the guy a hand to help him.

Jess scoffed and ignored the hand, getting up by himself. "I think it's a little late for the Boy Scout crap, Dean."

"Okay, I think we need to start this conversation over again," Sam said, stepping back and giving the guy room. "'Cause--wait, did you just call me Dean?"

"Yeah?" Jess said, wondering why that was a question. "Do you want a different name, because I've got some pretty choice ones ready."

"Like Dean Forester?" If there was a third guy who looked like him who was also named Dean, Sam was going to have some words with the universe in general.

Jess was starting to get the same weird feeling he'd gotten when he was talking to Brooke, like his half of the conversation didn't match up quite right, and he couldn't help but stare. "Did you smack your head? I didn't hit you that hard, and you can't tell me that skull of yours isn't thick."

Ignoring the insult for the moment, Sam sighed and put his hands up defensively. "Okay, we really need to start this over again. I'm not Dean. I'm Sam."

That didn't help with the staring at all. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Sam sighed, and tried to figure out how to explain things. "You know how you're not Peter? I'm not Dean. My name is Sam Winchester. I've met Dean, but I'm not him, I swear."

If Jess hadn't spent the weekend encountering one insane thing after another, he never would have believed that. But now, this was just one more thing to add to the growing list of reasons he hated this place.

"This is starting to get close to sick levels of karma," he said.

Sam smiled softly, giving him a sympathetic look. "You're Jess, right? I heard you mentioned on the radio..."

And there was Jess, back to staring again. "Yeah, I'm Jess. What radio?"

"There's a radio broadcast every night, where people take turns talking about what happened that day. It can be really helpful to listen to," Sam explained. "I know the first few days here can be kind of weird. This place takes a little getting used to."

"A little?" Jess said, feeling himself start to snap again. "You know, I don't get you people. Every time you talk about this place, you're always making it sound like nothing's that bad. 'Oh, it's kind of weird.' 'Things are a little odd.' You're not a little odd. You're 12 feet of odd."

After yesterday, Sam had spent enough time dealing with anger he did deserve that he wasn't up for being the target for bitterness that really had nothing to do with him.

"We're just trying to help the new people adjust," he said.

"Out of the goodness of your heart, huh?" Jess said. "Is there a rule that all the people who look alike have to be alike? Because you have that same annoying Boy Scout thing going, and it's really kind of sad."

Sam was definitely reaching the edge of his patience. "No, there's definitely no rule like that, because the guy who looks like you isn't a whiny bitch."

"Sorry, what was that? You want me to hit you again?"

"I really wouldn't recommend that right now."

Never one to pay attention to recommendations, Jess took a swing at Sam.

Sam had no trouble avoiding the swing, and tried to shove Jess backwards, hard.

Getting shoved might not have been so bad, if they weren't still arguing by the lake. The force of the push knocked Jess off balance, and into the water he went.

Satisfied with that outcome, Sam glared at Jess from the edge of the water. "Stay out of my way, and I'll stay out of yours," he said sharply, before starting to walk away.

Jess let his glare speak for him as he watched Sam leave and got himself out of the lake. If this was what his first weekend was like, this year couldn't possibly go by fast enough.

Robin waved to Sam as he rode by on his skateboard.

The squirrel hiding behind the bush taking notes frantically scribbled a note on his pad and held it up for Robin.

"B yE stupid? Shhhhhhh."
