Turtle & Canary; Saturday [ 09/06 ]

Coming into work today, Turtle decided that it was going to be a nice, quiet day. No real working or number crunching or stocking, because her head hurt from the rum she knew she shouldn't have let the squirrels bargain her into having. There was a sign on the cash register asking that everyone, please, keep their inside voices, and she clung to a bottle of aspirin and a pot of coffee, even though the latter tasted gross. The former didn't, though. It was a bottle of those chewable kids' aspirins that tasted like fake cherry.

Today's Squishy flavors: Cherry, Grape Judas, Purple Flavor

Turtle & Canary is open!

"Good afternoon!" Marco said perkily as he walked in.

"You okay?" Marco asked, still amused.

"Well...d'uh." Marco said wisely.

"So you sicked the squirrels on the skunks?"

Marco wasn't laughing, really.

"Turtle!"

Yes, it was the usual battle cry. And Jeff came bearing an exceptionally large jam sandwich, too. "I brought a jam sandwich!" In case she hadn't noticed.

He put the sandwich down on the counter. "I wasn't certain if you'd remember," Jeff said, "You were a bit soaked last night."

There was a moment, right there, where Jeff glanced up at the ceiling as if he expected a flashback to magically arrive, adding some ironic point to his reply, which was a simple, if eloquent, "Just a bit."

"They were a bit disruptive," Jeff had to agree, leaning over the counter, "although technically, I think it might've been a better idea just to let the skunks have the drinks until they passed out."

This looked to be a general store; Eliza was going to hope very much that it was, despite the name which implied it sold animals and related supplies.

She smiled at the girl behind the counter. "Good afternoon," she said. "Might I ... request your assistance?"

"You are too kind," Eliza smiled, dropping her a quick curtsy. "I might have mistaken you for one of my students, had you not declared yourself to be one of the owners here. My name is Miss Bennet, and since arriving here I've found myself lacking many ... essentials which one might require for daily existence. I have enough dresses, thank goodness, but I have been subsisting on tea which comes in small paper bags, and I am nearly out of ink."

"A pleasure to meet you, Miss Wexler," Eliza said. "There are pens which contain ink? That would be terribly convenient, if not for how messy it must be."

She bit her lower lip. "As for essentials, I'm afraid I haven't much of this world's money. Though I am teaching, which means I should be receiving money at regular intervals. I must confess to never being employed before; perhaps I'm mistaken how the arrangement goes."

"I write with my right hand," Eliza reassured her, lifting it with a smile. "I'm living in a basement apartment, and let us allow a moment to be grateful that my mother may never hear of this. There are unmarried men in that house, after all."

She seemed mostly amused by the idea, herself.

"If these pens have your recommendation, we must investigate them. As for the rest ..." She hesitated. "The room is very much mine, and I may do as I see fit. There is very little I need, most of the essentials are covered."

The room did not, however, have a sense of being hers, just yet. Hardly surprising, as she had only packed for a small stay with her aunt and uncle.

"I thank you," she said. "It would be especially nice to get myself my own tea-kettle instead of having one on loan. And I suppose it couldn't hurt to look around some, could it? Perhaps find one or two things that might make my home a little ... cozier."

Eliza was doomed.

Eliza turned the pen over and back again. "Marvelous," she said. "I shall return these, hopefully in pristine condition. I hope these aren't too dear. I've not been told what a teacher's salary is to be; but then, I haven't many expenses, at present, have I? I should hope I can indulge, however lightly."

So doomed.

"Thank you," she smiled. "And I confess, I haven't quite understood how your money relates to ours, just yet. "Lady Ghanima taught me to count it properly and what it all meant, but I don't quite understand the ratio, back to pounds."

Probably for the best, as two centuries' worth of inflation hadn't been kind to it.
