Luke's Diner, September 15 (Monday)

It was only partly cloudy out today, but Lacey couldn't shake an odd sense of melancholy. And really, she had no idea why -- she'd had a good weekend, and a very nicely redecorated apartment, and no stupid prank calls from Hank, so why was she mopey?

She had no clue. She was actually sorry she hadn't gotten stupid prank calls from Hank. This was in and of itself highly disturbing.

To compensate, she'd decorated the cake in the display case today with riotous colors and swirls within an inch of its life.

Luke's is open, and stubbornly determined in its cheer today.

. . . no, really, she had a good weekend!

"Heya lady!" Murdock grinned as he walked in, then took a seat on a stool at the counter. "How's you?"

He glanced at the specials and decided on ... "Can I get some coffee, please?"

That got him a pout from Lacey as she poured the coffee. "Don't you want to try something new?"

"Uh..." How to tell her that nothing up there was particularly appealing to him? "Can I be borin' and go with the same ol' same ol'?" he smirked lightly, trying to make it seem as if it was him and not the...specials themselves.

"Aren't you always the one telling me to be more adventurous?" Lacey wheedled. Just because it never worked on the residents of Dog River no matter how often she tried didn't mean she wasn't going to try it here. "The salad's especially nice, and the raspberry vinaigrette dressing gives it some extra zing, you know?"

Well yes, but that wasn't quite what he had in mind. He squirmed just a little.

"Um... I'm allergic to green stuff? And goats?"

No, not really. But he was getting desperate here.

"There's no actual goats in the omelette!" protested Lacey. "Just goat cheese. Which is more of a goat byproduct!"

"So it is made from a goat!" he protested back. "If it's a byproduct of goat, then it means goat's in there!"

What sound logic, yes?

"Yeah, well -- !" Sometimes even Lacey knew when not to follow a line of argument. "Are you allergic to turkey, too?"

"Er..." He could be in real trouble now. "Uh...no?"

"Then you're perfectly capable of ordering the turkey and avocado sandwich," Lacey said brightly. She was so clever sometimes, really.

Oh, defeat. It sucked sometimes.

He squirmed a bit in his seat, and made a slight face, almost like a kid who'd been told they had to finish their brussel sprouts.

"I...guess?"

Lacey was also, sometimes, like the overexcited dog who cornered a rabbit and then had no idea what to do with it.

"You do?" she asked, blinking in surprise. There was supposed to be more resistance at this point, usually.

No, not really. But since he'd already sort of agreed...

"Uh, yah. I reckon."

And since he'd already been cornerned, might as well give up the ruse.

he muttered, before thunking his forehead on the counter.

"Oh, Murdock, I'm so proud of you trying new things," Lacey said, and this time her cheerfulness was quite, in fact, genuine.

"And what was that?" she added in an exaggeratedly faux-innocent tone. "Did I just hear you saying you were so hungry you wanted to try the omelette too?"

His head jerked up and he blinked.

Long since in the creek without a paddle, now headed towards a waterfall.

"I think... just the sandwich."

Maybe he could even get it to go. There was an idea. Once out of sight... He grinned a little, thinking he had the perfect plan now. "Just that."

"Aw, okay," Lacey relented, content to bask in her small victory. For now.

Okay, maybe not entirely content. "Anything with that? Small side salad, maybe? Or I've got some nice vegetable soup today . . ."

Boy, she was determined today, wasn't she? Better make a choice before he wound up with something else thrust at him.

"What kind of pie do you have?"

Dessert was safer. Hopefully.

"Well," Lacey said hopefully, gesturing toward the display case, "we do have apple crumb and lemon meringue today, but there's also this lovely chocolate cake . . ."

"Cake?" He glanced over at the display case and blinked. "Wow. It's...colorful." It looked like it belonged in Charlotte's gallery. "That's too pretty to eat," he smiled a bit. Also - hi sugar!

"It is kind of art, isn't it?" Lacey beamed. "More the kind you appreciate with your mouth, though, I think."

"Well, I guess," he smiled lightly.

Oh goody. He could see it now. He'd be forever tasting turkey and avocado while bouncing off the walls. What fun.

"You're the best, Murdock," Lacey all but squeed. "Aw, you just brightened up my entire day."

He was sooo doomed. But he smiled anyway. He couldn't very well say no now and have it wreck her good day. Who knows, he might even like it. Maybe.

"You're welcome." That he meant honestly.
