Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 09/29 ]

After class and after tidying the store up a bit and taking care of a few 'managerial-type' stuff, Chad leaned against the counter (carefully) with a book in his hands. One about colleges. At this point, even if he was feeling uncertain, he knew he'd probably being going, so now the thing was just figuring out where and what.

Today's Mix: Teddy.

He never minds interruptions.

Well, he usually doesn't, anyway.

"Afternoon, Chad!" Ino chirped, wandering inside. She'd promised him, after all, that she'd come in.

Chad lifted his chin in acknowledgment, placing a marker in his book and setting it aside. "Afternoon, imouto. What's up?"

She shrugged impishly, meandering over to lean against the counter and beam at him. "Not that much," Ino said, "hanging low, lots of studying, stuff like that. How're you?"

"About the same," Chad said with a slight nod, holding up for a moment the book on colleges. "Take it you're here to get some music?"

"Yes, please," she said, wrinkling her nose at the college book. "How many colleges are there?"

"...A lot," Chad said, after a bit of a moment to try and see if there was a better answer to that question. There wasn't. "Even if I just restrict myself to New York to keep working. An' even if I do finally narrow it down, they still gotta accept me..."

He shook his head slightly. "But music," he said, because music was easy. Music he understood and didn't hurt his brain. Well, some music did, but they wouldn't be getting into that. "You need some. Have you been keeping up with much of it here?"

College, she decided, was way too much hassle.

Ino tugged at her hair sheepishly. "Not really?" she admitted. "I generally just turn it on to the most upbeat station I can find at the time and then just have it playing in the background."

Chad nodded a little. "I only ask," he explained, "to know where to start on what you might like. Anything really stuck out to you more than anything else?"

That got more hair tugging, as she tried to remember. "I liked the ones that sounded happy if you weren't paying attention, but they weren't really," she said eventually, scrunching her nose in dismay at the vague that that had. "Like, um..." Ino needed to start paying attention more to the radio instead of just zoning out and humming along to the choruses, "Leona Lewis?"

At least she remembered a name? Give her a few more minutes and she might even remember a song that was sung by her.

Chad tried not to wince. Well, she did say that she mostly just turned on the radio, so he supposed she couldn't be faulted for that. "Well," he said, wondering if he should just save himself some pain, "we do have her CD..."

It wasn't her fault that that was played a lot. She didn't know better!

"Do you recommend her?" Ino asked, eyeing him.

"She's not really my...taste," Chad decided to answer, carefully, figuring that covered it well, "though I do have to admit that she had a very impressive use of her vocals. It's just a little too...saccharine. For me."

She wrinkled her nose cheerfully enough at that. "So," Ino said, "knowing that I don't mind her, what would you suggest?"

"Because music," Chad muttered, slightly amused, "is easily something based on one facet. You ever get into J-Pop yet? But that almost seems like too easy of a direction to take with you."

Music was background noise to her, seriously. She didn't know what to take seriously about it.

"Do I want to know?" It wasn't like J-Pop was played on the radio much in Maryland, after all.

That managed to wrangle a small grin out of Chad. "Hey, I like it," he said, which, in his opinion, said a lot. He was totally a music snob. "Some of it, anyway. I'm biased, though. The 'J' stands for Japanese."

"Ooooh," Ino said, grinning as she got it. "It's in our language then?"

A beat.

"Or, well, one of your languages, and my primary one though they don't call it that back home." Japanese.

Chad nodded. "Yup. And a lot of it's light and bouncy and poppy, but some of them have lyrics that, you know, if you really listen to them, you're kind of like, 'uhhhh.' Really funny, 'cause all these American kids have no idea what they're singing."

Okay, that got a grin.

"Some of that then?"

Chad nodded with a thoughtful sort of grunt, going over a few options in his head. He knew he had said bouncy and poppy, but the other singer they had to go off of lead him to...

He moved from behind the counter, motioning for Ino to follow as he lead her over to the imports section and looking for what he was thinking. He pulled out an Utada Hikaru (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6oXp5Bl_rQ) CD. "She's pretty popular right now, but, well...popular isn't always bad. You can sample it in one of the listening booths if you want. Or you could just bring it back for something different if you don't like it."

She trailed him (like a duckling!) over to the imports and contemplated the CD.

"I'll be brave," she decided, grinning, "and take it with me."

And if she hated it, she'd wibble at him. A lot.

And then he'll shove something like...Shonen Knife at her. That probably couldn't go wrong.

Chad nodded, though, proud of Ino's bravery, and gave her a thumbs up. "Sounds good. Happy birthday."

All those Baby Einstein CDs are on sale today.

Jus' getting my stuff up before crashing. Sp is looooove!
