Luke's Diner, October 25 (Saturday)

You might have said that Lacey had this strange feeling she'd missed out on something yesterday, but doing that wasn't exactly out of the ordinary so it's not as if she would have actually noticed.

She wasn't normally in the diner on Saturdays, but feeling the need to make sure it looked extra presentable on Parents' Weekend she'd cleaned the place within an inch of its life and set out fresh flower vases on all the tables.

Turkey, Bacon, and Provolone on Fresh Foccacia Bread
Chili Cheese Dogs
Fancy Fruit Salad

Not that she was trying to impress anyone in particular.

Brent came in early, a smile on his face. "You're a hard woman to find," he said. "I was beginning to think you'd started ninja training. Or... if I was Hank, I would've started to think you were a ninja."

"No," said Lacey, "they haven't offered a class in that y -- oh my gosh, Brent?!?"

Brent nodded. "I think so. Unless I'm not myself today."

Lacey went flying over to hug him. "No, that definitely sounds like the same old Brent. What are you doing here? You actually set foot outside of Saskatchewan!"

"I had to pull a couple favors," he said. "I had to leave Wanda in charge for a bit. I'm honestly scared as to what I'll return to." He hugged her happily.

"You left Wanda in charge?"

Flash-cut to a soft-focus fantasy version of the interior of Corner Gas, with ominous music playing softly in the background. Through the front door a long line of cars is visible outside at the pumps, and instead of the music building a chorus of honking begins to drown it out.

It's IMPENDING CHAOS! And where's the attendant?

Out of the fantasy frame, there's the slam of a door, and Hank comes pelting through the scene, chased by the diminutive, blonde, broom-wielding form of Wanda. And just as quickly as they appear, they're off through the front door, despite the waiting customers.

Lacey shuddered at the thought, but that didn't mean she was any less happy -- or flaily -- to see Brent. "How's the Ruby holding up? Your mom isn't ready to kill me for leaving her in charge, is she?"

"No, but I might be," Brent said with a chuckle. "I head over there for a chili cheese dog, and without fail I'll be asked why I'm not working."

"What, like that's news?" Lacey asked before she could stop herself. As if she ever did stop herself from saying these things. "Aw, how's Dog River doing? I miss everyone so much."

"Oh, the usual. My dad is crotchety, Wanda's a smarty pants, and Hank is, well... Hank," Brent said.

"Has he bathed at all since I left?" asked Lacey.

"...Which one, my Dad, or Hank?" Brent asked.

"Much as it pains me to think of either of them that way, yes."

"I have to say, yes," Brent said. "Mainly because you've been gone long enough that if they hadn't, my mother would have killed them. Or just attacked them with a hose. And then turned on the water."

There was a liopleurodon on TV last night. I was certain it was a magical liopleurodon, Charlie!
