Loki still had some Halloween candy left over so you can bet your ass that's what he was eating for breakfast. He never believed in the fucking stupid food pyramid anyway. Life was way too damn short to eat turnips and beets just to keep yourself healthy.

There was a pile of candy on his desk, hiding almost all the paperwork he'd had the pipe dream of completing. What the fuck ever. Candy was better.

Ben had a place to work and he'd had breakfast and he had some clothes that he'd bought from himself. The other thing he needed right now was a place to live because the floor of the store wasn't exactly ideal.

So when he spotted one of the island's taller buildings that happened to look sufficiently apartmenty, he figured it might be a good idea to go ahead and check it out.

"Good morning," Ben said, walking up to the guy in the lobby. "I saw a sign that said you had apartments to rent. I'd like to rent one of them."

"Goddamn, another new one?" Loki asked, flicking a candy wrapped across the desk. "Don't you people go to bigger fucking cities?"

"I just came from New York," Ben said. 'Just' in this case, was a relative term, of course. "I'm looking for something a little quieter for a while."

"You picked a really damn good place then," Loki said. "Quiet is all this place is until they have some fucking huge event where everyone and their brother shows up to crawl around the island like cockroaches."

"Oh, so this town is some kind of tourist trap or something?" Ben asked. He was kind of amused by the cockroach simile. That meant this guy would at least be one of the more entertaining landlords Ben had dealt with over the years.

"Tourist trap?" Loki scoffed. "Hell no. People actually come here to stay here like they're going to find the fucking meaning of life or something."

"You never know, it could happen," Ben said. At least he hoped so, since that was exactly why he was sticking around. "Maybe the meaning of life involves having tiny streets."

"All this place has is an above average bar, some hot women and some guy named Barney that's getting married when he could be fucking famous the world over," Loki said. "Of course, I haven't even been here a month so I'm probably not an expert."

Sarah'd had a few days to get the sense of the town, and the confines of her hotel room were starting to drive her crazy. She stopped by the apartment building before the wedding.

"Hi," she said, hands in pockets as she approached the main in the lobby. "Do you know who I'd talk to about renting?"

Sarah shrugged a little. Clearly not your personality, she thought.

"I just sort of inherited a business," she said. "I don't know about anyone else."

On her way out for the day, Daisy gave the landlord a wave. "How's it going today?" she asked.

"Well, I'm still stuck here but I've got some good goddamn candy so I guess it could be worse," he said, spinning around in his chair a bit. "Where you off to? Saving the world?"

"If I'm lucky," Daisy responded with a bright grin. "Nothing much, though. A few errands, maybe get to know a bit more of the town better; I'm still trying to decide whether or not to go into the station for a bit of extra work."

The answer to that would most likely be a resounding yes.

Also, she had to ask, "Is the candy really that goddamn good?"

"Well, I think so," he said but gestured to his pile. "But have some. I'm feeling gracious today and who better to share my candy with than an officer of the law who lives in my building."

"Oh, I'm sure there could be a few more intimidating qualifiers to be added if you really thought about it," Daisy said, searching out for what looked to be the most chocolaty and sweet choice before carefully extracting it from the pile. "I could also, oh, I don't know, breathe fire or something."

"Maybe that's something I should start working on," Daisy unwrapped the chocolate with a smirk. "One hell of a party trick, but I imagine it's got to cause a few indigestion problems. Nothing a little peppermint or Soya oil can't help with, though."
