Beach, Tuesday Morning

The cigarette in Romeo's mouth as he stood facing the waves had no idea he aimed for it to be his last. It did its job merrily enough, giving up the last of its not-life in showers of ash and smoke.

When it was gone, its brothers in the pack experienced moments of alarm -- they died in water, not in flame, as the young man tossed them into the water one by one. Their drowning wails were silent.

The heavy silver lighter watched this with anxiety, fearing it would follow as Romeo bounced it in his palm, but, ultimately, it was returned to his pocket, snug and warm against his flank.

And then Romeo sat down to look at the water, huddled against the sudden early winter chill. It was his birthday and he was 18, somehow. Giving up smoking seemed a fitting way to mark the official end of a childhood that was, he thought, long gone.
