Luke's Diner; Thursday [ 11/13 ]

Considering that he'd spent almost a full week now taking care of his exgirlfriend as a kitten, Cal had realized that his life recently had been pretty low-key. He rather liked this. He intended for it to stay like this if he could help it, which was why he was just hanging out behind the counter of the diner today, reading up on the other articles (and maybe reading through his own quite proudly) in the Fandom High Times and reading through play that gave even more evidence to the fact that his culture was a very, very special one.

Not that he needed help in knowing that.

"Hi!" she said, flopping down on a stool, then blinking at the specials. "So, do any of those involve blowtorches?"

"They can?" Cal offered with a little bit of a grin. "But not traditionally, no. The first one's meatballs in a tomato sauce, the second one is stuffed tomatoes, and the third is this gummi type thing. First and second were really big in the city in Turkey that my family lived in before coming to America."

He said that last bit with an immense sense of pride.

"Pity," she said, tugging at her hair. "Blowtorches kinda rock." Well they did.

"Feeling very Greek today, or something?"

"Greek is kind of something I can't just stop being," Cal pointed out with a grin. "And every Thursday's going to be like this. There's Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Japanese...everything here. Except for a good Greek place. So Thursdays at Luke's will be Greek Day." He gave a firm nod.

"Which means saganaki's always on the menu so if you really want to blow torch something..."

"That is very true," Cal agreed amiacably. "Besides, I don't think some of this would taste nearly as good blow-torched, although you're welcome to try."

"I think I'll pass today on it," she decided after giving it careful thought. "Maybe next week, depending on what's burnable on your specials."

"Okay, okay," Cal rolled his eyes theatrically. "So, other than not wanting to burn things this week, what's up?"

"Stuff," she said impishly. "And my arms hurt 'cause spears are not made to be practicing with for hours and hours if you're not used to them."

"A spear?" Cal asked, chuckling as he did because he could only picture short little Ino trying to lob a spear about twice her size.

Claire came over during her lunch break, Penelope-the-piglet in tow. "Hey, Cal. So what is the Gemista thing, and do you have some chocolate cake for my roommate?" She held Penelope up illustratively. "I swear it's all she wants to eat."

"Oh, that's your roommate?" Cal asked, looking a little relieved. "Here I was thinking you were bringing that in hoping I knew how to cook it, but I'm sorry, if it's not frozen or ground first, I can't do a thing with it."

"Yeah," he continued, moving to get the requested food, "we're got cake. And tomates gemista is tomatoes stuff with meat and cheese and vegetables and stuff."

Claire covered Penelope's ears. "We don't talk about cooking her," she claimed. "I don't want her to get a complex, she already worries enough when she's a person. Besides, I tried caling her 'Bacon' once and she gave me this look." Which Penelope did again on cue. "See?"

"I'll take stuffed tomatoes-thingy for me and a slice of cake for her."

Cal was trying his best not to laugh or think of a litany of other things to call Claire's roommate (Spare Rib was probably right out; Cutlet, too), but he figured thinking of other delicious pork products was a good way to distract himself from thinking about what he and Kevin were talking about in class, which he told himself he wasn't going to think about if Claire came in, but, of course, telling himself that only made him more likely to think about it.

Cal just focused on the order. "Not going to pester me about torching something today, huh?" he asked.

Ham and Tenderloin were also definite no-fly zones.

Claire was too distracted by Blair's flat refusal to pay much attention to Kevin and Cal in class, and therefore had no idea what was going through Cal's head. This was probably a good thing, as it kept her thoughts from taking a distinctly uncomfortable turn.

"Oh, I could if you wanted me to," she said. "But I got a job! I should actually not stay and bother you for too long today. You know, got to get back and seem responsible."

Cal tried to keep his mind off of potential hidden freckles and Kevin's baffling aversion to breasts as he got Claire's roommate as large a piece of chocolate cake as he could.

That was why, when Cal gave Claire a smile, it was more shy than usual, and his eyes were distinctly diverted.

"A job?" he said. "How am I going to call you lazy now?"

Claire wasn't sure what was going on with that smile, but she liked it. She smiled back. "It's one day a week at the secondhand store," she said. "Not your crazy schedule."

The cake went on the floor before Penelope, who dove in in what was a positively restrained manner for a pig.

"That has got to be," Cal remarked as he watched Penelope for a moment with a little bit of fascination, "the cutest pig I think I've ever seen."

Of course, he might have just been fond of her restrained manner for the fact that it meant he didn't have to clean up a complete mess after her.

"And my schedule's not that bad. I mean, what, three classes, two clubs, two jobs, a play, and temporary radio fill-in. If you ask me, I've got way too much time on my hands."

And, yes, that was sarcasm.

"Cute, and, I swear her side of the room is cleaner with her being a pig than mine is with me being a person," Claire claimed. "She's housebroken and everything, too. I just hope her mom doesn't call while she's like this, 'cause that would be a little hard to explain."

She reached for a napkin to play with. "What's your class that's not sex ed or art?"

Oh, yes, ma'am, your daughter is a pig.

Well, there have been more bizarre phone calls made to mothers before in Cal's expeirence. He watched the pig eat the cake for a moment before shaking his head slightly at strains of Tessie's voice in his head.

"Cooking!" he informed Claire, a bit more boldly than he intended, to help him fully break out of that. "Where I learn how to expertly boil water without burning it."
