Turtle & Canary, Wednesday, 11/26

Amber was far too bouncy to sit still behind the counter. She grabbed a broom and swept up and down aisles, stocked shelves, took inventory, and hummed and sang off and on with her ipod.

She was going on a Thanksgiving roadtrip! Whoo! She was already packed and ready to leave right after work. It should be fun and she was really looking forward to it. And then Friday night she had a date with Liir. It was not completely and entirely unexpected that they would hang out, but Amber was looking forward to it on an entirely different level. She just hoped he would have fun with her.

But oooh! Turkey. She kind of couldn't wait to have some.

Romeo wandered in on his lunch break and just stared at the Squishy machine for a moment. "There's a gravy flavor now?"

Amber grinned. "The Squishy is a fabulous thing, Romeo. It's like it knows it's Thanksgiving."

"Thanksgiving or no, I still don't want to drink icy gravy," Romeo shuddered as he reached for a cup. "I'll try the cranberry sauce, though. That's seasonal and tasty."

"Are you staying here for the holiday?"

"Sokka might drink enough for both of us," laughed Amber. "I'm not touching it." She grabbed him a cranberry one.

"Nah. Ma wants me home for the holiday so I'm heading out after work today. It's like a trailer block party Thanksgiving day in Mount Rose, so I don't want to miss it." A beat. "Are you staying here?"

"I knew Sokka was touched," Romeo decided, with a heavy shake of his head. "And I am. My family can get by without me this year. I have to say, though, I'm intrigued by the idea of a trailer block party; if I had such to go to I might head home."

"They're fun and lively and you get to hear all the good gossip, if any kind of gossip is good," she added wryly. "Besides, if I didn't go, I wouldn't hear the end of it and ma just might get it in her to come here and drag me home."

"Much better to go on your own," Romeo said, envisioning his own father coming to pull him away. It wasn't a pretty mental image. "Thanksgivng isn't nearly as important to my family as Christmas -- I'll have to go home for that, but I can skip this visit."

"I have to go home for Christmas too. I try not to miss that with ma since I'm all she's got and she's all I've got. Any holiday is like that for her, so I'm like the good daughter," she said, grinning. "Kind of need help cooking when you've only got one hand."

"I'm an only child, but there are a lot of Montagues," Romeo explained, trying to remember if he'd ever told Amber as much. "So my father will see the larger family and miss me less. I can't imagine even trying to cook one-handed."

He'd told her, but it was some time ago. "I've always wondered what coming from a larger family feels like. I could actually have a lot of step brothers or sisters out there considering my dad's a carnie." She shrugged. "I try not to dwell."

"Half-siblings, even," Romeo said helpfully. "But it's probably better not to dwell, if you won't meet them. I might have some myself, come to that. My parents were older when they married, and I'm sure my father had partners."

Which was gross to think about.

"I don't think ma had partners when she was with my dad, but to this day, she cries every time she sees a fat lady in a tube top." A beat. "Partners before? Yah, probably. Her and Loretta are best friends and Loretta's kind of a whore. That's got to rub off on someone, right?"

"... your family is very different from mine," Romeo told her gravely. "Your father left with a fat lady in a tube top?"

"Might as well have, and you know, I'm not real sure but once a carnie always a carnie and I think they tend to stick together," she explained, realizing her family had to be way different from anyone elses. "What's your family like, other than large?"

"Not carnies," Romeo said, mostly to fill the air as he though about how to explain the Montagues. "They all but run the city we're from. Very religious, but it's more in the culture than anything. My father's head of the family firm; they're land developers." Among less legitimate activities. "It's nothing to do with me, really."

So Romeo's family was very wealthy...and Amber went on about a trailer block party. Great.

God, she was such an idiot.

"Wow. Uh. Wow."

Romeo went bright red at that reaction. "It's not that interesting," he said quickly. "Really."

His blush meant something entirely different. Hm. "Sounds interesting to me."

"It's not anything I did," Romeo stuttered. "And, you know, all my relations have both hands, so there's not much for me to do at Thanksgiving."

"I think you're the first person to care all year."

Amber's brows shot upwards. There seemed to be a story here. Of some kind. "Thanksgiving's not just about cooking. I don't think. Loretta claims the turkey leg, but whatever."

...

"I'm sorry?"

He shook his head. "I'm not my family's favorite person," he half-explained. "That's all. You needn't be sorry."

She waited a half-minute before she asked, "You don't like talking about yourself do you?"

"I don't like taking about the Montagues," Romeo answered. "I'll talk about Romeo all day." With a few exceptions.

"Ah, big difference," she said. "But I try not to be too nosey so I won't bug you but I admit, you have me curious."

"What did you want to ask?" Romeo said, after a second of mental debate. Amber wasn't a close friend, but she was a friend, and for a friend he'd answer a question. Possibly several.

"Why you don't like talking about the Montagues?" she asked, for starters. And that question in and of itself might be too much.

Amber didn't start with the easy ones, did she?

"Because at home it's all I am," Romeo said. "There were, there are still, people who would shoot me just because of my last name, which I've no control over. And because it was nice, here, that no one much cared that my family had money. Other people have more."

No. But she didn't mean to start out hard.

"That sounds like the mafia, Romeo."

Romeo raised an eyebrow in a silent yes, and?. "It's getting better now," he said. "Or so my cousin tells me."

"It's just, that sounds really kind of scary and I'm glad you're here, if watching mafia movies compares at all or... am I way off in left field here?"

"No, you're near home plate," Romeo admitted. "I wrote, went to church, and tried to make it not my fight. It's not, after all."

"But it's a beautiful city."

"No, but from what I understand, it's all about your name. Just like you mentioned before," she commented, thinking it a shame.

"Do you miss it?"

"You can change your name," Romeo pointed out. "I did nothing to earn it, and little to keep it."

He gave a weak smile. "I miss the way it once was every day. But it's not my home anymore."

"The other family, who are they?"

Amber felt for him and wondered what he was going to do when he was done with school here.

"The Capulets," Romeo answered. "They're flashier than Montagues, but much the same otherwise. No one remembers how the dispute started."

He was omitting a key fact here, yes.

"No one remembers?" she asked, her brows knitting gently together. "If no one remembers then why is it important that there was a dispute to begin with?"

There was a bitter laugh at that. "Amber, would that I knew that. I've no idea. I never saw any point in it myself."

"I guess powerful families fight for the sake of fighting itself," she replied, somewhat unsure, because she simply couldn't wrap her brain around it. But what did she know? She grew up in a trailer park where the highlight of anyone's week was to see the retard get himself stuck in a car door. And wasn't that just wrong?

"They do in my experience," Romeo said. "It's all about having the upper hand, really."

Still no notifications. LJ sucks.
