Things Reborn, Saturday

Ben was planning on taking the day off tomorrow, but he couldn't really let Things Reborn be closed on the two days it was actually open in a given calendar week, so he split the difference and came in today. It might confuse customers into coming in and buying stuff. He couldn't be sure until he tried.

[OOC: I may be AFK most of tomorrow, so I'm hedging my bets and posting today. Huzzah!]

"Yes, I am," Ben said. "Are you a customer?"

"No, Mister Reilly, not today," Turtle said. "I'm a reporter. My name's T.R. Wexler, and I'm with the Fandom High Times. I'm not sure if you've been able to acquaint yourself with our little paper, sir, but I've been doing a regular feature on new businesses in the town, and was wondering if you might have the time for an interview."

"Well, we're the only two people here and if you're not buying anything, I guess I have some free time on my hands," Ben said. "And it's always nice to get some good press."

Because he knew bad press. Oh boy, did he ever know bad press.

"Thank you very much, Mister Reilly," Turtle nodded, shifting her bag to her side so that she could pull out a little notebook. "My readers and I greatly appreciate it. Now, let's start out with the important details: what, exactly, is Things Reborn all about?"

"It's about giving things a second chance," Ben said. "Which is my really pretentious way of saying that everything we sell is used but still good for someone else to use again. But if I say it that first way, it sounds more important."

Turtle grinned slightly. "So, basically, a thrift store, yes?"

"I prefer 'second hand store'," Ben said. "But yeah, it's a thrift store."

Turtle took careful note of the preference. "So why a second hand store, Mister Reilly?"

"No special reason," Ben said because 'cosmic irony' was too personal an answer to give. "I was looking to set up a business somewhere and I came up with a supplier who was happy to get a bunch of old stuff off his hands. I could have said no and started a pizza place, but there's already a pizza place here and I can't do that tossing the dough move so I would have felt like a sham."

"Do you have any other neat tricks to compensate for not being able to do the dough move?"

In the world of T.R. Wexler, this was a totally relevant question.

"Not in the world of pizza making," Ben said. "So really, the choice was pretty obvious."

"Well, I mean," Turtle gestured a little, "in general. Like...card tricks. Or being able to touch your nose with your tongue. Or patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time. I'm really good at that last one."

"Oh, in general," Ben said. "I'm a decent photographer. I can ride a motorcycle. And that's about it, really." Except for spinning a web, any size, to catch thieves just like flies. And coming back from the dead. But those weren't worth mentioning.

"And you both buy and sell things, right?"

"Yep. If anyone has anything old they don't have a use for - clothes, electronics, bookcases, anything - we'll be happy to take it off their hands and try to put it into someone else's hands," Ben said.

"Anything?" Turtle asked, trying to search her brain quickly, but effectively, for one of the worst things she could think of.

"At the very least, we'll entertain all offers," Ben said, realizing what kind of silliness his word choice could lead to. "Especially if the offers entertain us."

"Any chance of a higher payment for the entertaining?" Turtle couldn't help wonder with a slightly wry smirk. "Points for creativity, so to speak?"

She wondered if Mister Reilly yet realized that there'd probably never be a shortage of that around here.

"I don't make any promises, but it's possible," Ben said.

Duly noted, along with a few ideas for the article.

"And what brought you here to Fandom Island, Mister Reilly?"

"I don't know," Ben said. And that part of his answer was true, at least. "It seemed like a decent place that manages to stay... interesting. And I like small towns. Seemed like as good a place as any to settle for a while."

"And where were you before coming here, Mister Reilly?"

"All over the place, really," Ben said. "New York's the last place I actually settled down in for a while, though."

"So you're familiar," Turtle mused, "with this particular sort of world? Or is it, like, crazy Doomsday apocalyptic New York? Ooh! Or even worse! 1980s New York!"

"It's a superhero New York," Ben said. "So I've seen giant robots try to take over the world, stuff like that."
