Wellspring Arms & Meditation Center, Thursday

A single glance outside had told Cable he was lucky to be working from home. He hadn't... been aware there were so many rickshaws on the island.

He made a mental note to get Robin to index them next time he was at Town Hall. These were, after all, important details.

He flipped the Open sign on the door with care (the rickshaws did get a little... close), peered outside once, then went inside. He needed to check up on ways to get to Congo fast. Just in case.

"There is glitter in the showers (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhighdorms/1522812.html?thread=124467836#t124467836)," she informed him, as she walked inside. "And you are not a regular part of the schedule I am avoiding, so good morning to you."

"Hm," Cable grunted, glancing up from over where he'd progressed from checking out ways into Congo to checking out air travel to Zimbabwe. It was a busy week. "Good morning," he echoed, "...Glitter?"

"In the showers," she repeated, with a swish of her sparkly hair. "It's a bit different, though I suppose that renders it much the same around here as business as usual."

"Glitter isn't exactly an island emergency," he noted, "I'd like to think."

"I wouldn't think so either," she mused, glancing at herself. "Otherwise I'd be in a dire situation indeed. I cannot get away from my own skin after all."

"You'd be surprised what's possible," he replied. Sam's sister had had that particular quality.

"You know someone who can?" she wondered. "Wouldn't that lead to infection and suchlike?"

"She has the mutant power of removing her own skin, causing it to be substituted by something else," Cable explained. "Metal or wood don't infect easy."

"I suppose not," she said easily. "Though would does rot if you are not careful and that would be distinctly unpleasant as well. Or bugs. Metal would be much safer unless there was a fire, otherwise I suppose it would hurt. Much better though, than my impression of someone merely without any skin at all, and nothing else covering."

"I haven't seen that one on anyone." A pause. "Voluntarily."

"I would hope, though I do not hold out much, that in no world is there someone who would do so voluntarily. If I really believed it then, no doubt, I would be proven wrong with due haste."

"There's extremists in every corner," he agreed, wryly. "But most of us are still sticking to the middle."

"Do you like the middle?" she asked, with a tilt of her head. "I do not think I always care for it."

He smiled just a touch. "The middle's where we can meet each other," he said, "The extremes can be more interesting, but no peace was ever made out there."

She blinked at him for a moment. "I do not think," Viki ventured, "that that entirely counts as an answer to the question, if you don't mind me saying so."

"You asked me if I like the middle," he said, frankly. "And what I'm saying is that the middle is in most ways better than the alternative. A lot better. Most of our problems spawn from sticking to extremes. From letting the extreme overpower the middle."

"Mmmm," she hummed. "But you can think something is better while still not liking it best, don't you think? Is the middle always your favourite? Or is it merely always the best solution?"

"Sometimes, you have to break an egg," he said, vaguely. "It's not a matter of liking either one. It's a question of necessity."

"Not everything is necessity," she said easily. "Most things aren't even, but we're still supposed to find the middle of them."

"I'm not talking about most things," Cable replied. "I'm talking about politics, poverty, famine, the environment. You know," he said, "The small things..."

She grinned a bit.

"And I am talking about everything and nothing," Viki said. "So our topics are not entirely matching up, but that is alright too."

"Everything and nothing doesn't really come with any borders," he pointed out, "So there's not much in terms of the middle or the edges to discuss. Or practicality to apply."

"But people in and of themselves are everything and nothing, all contained," she said, smiling. "Because while we can do a lot, a lot of people won't ever do anything that makes a difference, so we're both all at the same time. So there are borders, and there aren't, and meeting in the middle is what happens when one person, who is everything and nothing, talks to another everything and nothing person."

...there was logic in there somewhere. Really!

He considered her for a moment. "You should look up Karl Jaspers," he said, finally, "Kierkegaard, maybe." Cable brushed his fingers over the desk to remove some of the dust. "Some help untangling those strands of thought."

"Maybe," she said, with a shrug that meant maybe yes, and maybe no, "how do you spell the second one, please? Though I do not think I need help to think, as thinking comes naturally, and thoughts are my own."

"It never hurts to take a look at someone else's ideas," he said, taking a pen and quickly scribbling the name down. "It's a good exercise for the mind, if nothing else."

"Well and true enough," Viki conceded. "And perhaps it will prove interesting. If nothing else, it is different, and for that I am glad."

"Just take it with enough of a grain of sand to keep things well in the middle," Cable replied, a slight smirk tugging on his lips. He slid her the note.

She studied the note and grinned. "Maybe I'll remember that," Viki said. It was almost a joke. "Are you being well and mayorly? I don't think I ever asked, and I meant to, because if nothing else, I remember who is in charge and where."

"If by 'mayorly' you mean 'kept the island going', I think the answer is out on the streets." That was definitely a joke. And also serious. "...Despite the traffic."

"Is the traffic especially bad?" Viki hadn't noticed really, having been lazy and blinking herself right to the doorstep.

"Today," he said, with all the weight (and the sighing inflection) that the statement required, "It is."

"Oh my," she said, glancing at the windows. "Ought I just forget about making it to the park then, perhaps?"

"With your talents," Cable replied, "I don't really see it being a problem."

"Unless I end up on the beach instead," she said, with a laugh. "Which I might. I am not so picky."

"Then don't worry about the traffic," he advised, leaning back in his seat. "Enjoy the day."

"You as well," she said sincerely. "And I will try."

Then she blinked, and was gone.
