The Arms Hotel Lobby, Saturday

It vaguely registered on Viki that there were new people coming in and perhaps she ought to go down and see them. But there was the fact that she had her job, and she didn’t really mind the fact that she had her job.

Perhaps she’d cut out a bit early to catch the end of it? She mulled over that, for a few minutes, and decided that, yes, if she felt like it then that was the plan.

Mary had a big smile on her face as she entered the lobby. She liked newbie day herself.

"Viki, if you'd like to go to the picnic, I'll be happy to cover for you," she said. Then, lowering her voice to a whisper, she added, "I know how all the boys take their shirts off at the picnic. You'll probably want to be there."

"Oh hello, Miss Mary," Viki said, with a bit of a grin. "I had though, perhaps, I might just be able to go a little early? I do not mind missing some of it at all."

"That's fine," said Mary. "I just wouldn't want you to miss out."

"I will make sure to see some of it," she promised. "And, perhaps, by the end of the day, there will be less people in their shirts."

"Well, make sure you enjoy it for me," said Mary, grinning.

"I shall do my best," she said, beaming. "Have you been well enough lately, Miss Mary?"

'I''ve been good," said Mary. "I had a really nice New Year's Eve. Dr. Tam came over and we watched a movie."

"That does sound nice," she said agreeably. "Quiet, but not dull, and sometimes that is much nicer than doing anything more."

"I know there was a big party, but I wasn't in the mood for one," said Mary. "And a nice quiet night in gave Simon and I plenty of time to talk."

"Plenty of good in that then." She smiled. "And has it been a good new year for you as of now?"

"Well, 2008 had so many ups and downs that I'm sure anything could be better," said Mary, fiddling with her engagement ring. No, she hadn't brought herself to take it off yet. She usually just turned it so the stone wasn't visible.

If anyone needs me here, no problem, just might be slow as I suspect most of my attention will be at the picnic.
