Groovy Tunes, Saturday [1/3]

Hurley opened the store today, knowing full well he was missing the big picnic for the new students.

But he wasn't going to ask Chad to cover his shift just because he wanted to meet new people. That wouldn't be cool.

So it was a slightly forlorn Hurley at the music store today.

It wasn't that tough for Harper to find the store since she remembered her way around from her last visit. "Hi! Are you Hurley? I'm Harper. I got your message."

"Oh, hey," Hurley said. "You must be my new, like, little sibling, huh?"

"Looks like it!" said Harper. "This is going to be cool! I don't have any siblings. It's just my Mom, Dad, Grandma and me back home."

"Cool," Hurley said. "Where's home? I'm from Santa Monica, myself."

"I'm from New York City," said Harper. "I used to go to school in Tribeca, but when my friend Alex left to come here, it was pretty lonely without her."

"Awww man, I can only imagine," Hurley said. "I wonder if my friend Johnny is having that problem back home."

"Well, it wouldn't have been so bad, I guess. Alex's parents own a sub shop on Waverly Place and I used to go hang out there with her brothers," said Harper. "Or, at least I tried to. They spend an awful lot of time doing inventory. And then my dad decided to take a vacation from my mom, which isn't that unusual except that he hasn't come back for a while. My parents really like their alone time."

Wow, the dad taking a 'vacation' thing kinda... hit a soft spot for Hurley.

"Yeah," he said, putting on a smile. "Though now you're here, which is going to be awesome. Seriously, this school is the best."

"Good! So, what do I need to know about this place?" asked Harper.

"There's, like... people from different planets," Hurley said. "And I'm not lying."

"Oh, wow. I'll have to watch out for them. Someone at the picnic warned me to watch out for a boy named Cal who likes to spit at people."

Because in Harper's mind, she thought that he meant there were people who were so crazy that they thought they were out of this world.

"Dude, I have never seen him do that," Hurley said.

"Really? Turtle made him sound so awful," said Harper. She would feel really bad if Turtle turned out to be the mean girl spreading rumors like Gigi did back home.

"Oh, well," Hurley said. "I guess Turtle means it, then. I don't really know the guy that well."

That did make Harper feel a little better. "Well, guess I'll have to meet this guy for myself and see," she said.

"Best way to know people," Hurley said. "And really, most people I've met here are totally cool. I mean, way cooler than me, even."

"I have trouble believing that," said Harper with a genuine smile. "It looks like you've got a really cool job."

"Oh, this is just my Saturday job," Hurley said. "Though this place is nice. I kinda like working at the flower shop more."

"Two jobs? Wow," said Harper. "I worked for a while at the roller rink back home, and once I worked at the Waverly Place Sub Station. But that didn't work out so well."

"Sandwiches weren't really your thing?" Hurley asked.

"Not when I kept dropping them on the floor or smashing them when I collided with my boss," said Harper. "Sometimes, I have a little coordination problem. But I got over it really quickly and quit to go work at the ice cream parlor."

"Ice cream, awesome," Hurley said. "There's a place around here, serves great ice cream. Might be hiring, if you're needing a job."

"The ice cream thing didn't work out so well either," said Harper. "I mean, it all started out so well, and then all of a sudden, there was ice cream everywhere! It was a huge mess."

Of course, Harper hadn't known that the cure for her clumsiness had been one of Alex's spells, and that when the spell was broken, Harper became a klutz again.

"Man," Hurley said. "Whatever you do, don't get a job in a glassware store." He chuckled.

Harper shuddered at the thought. "Yeah, that would be bad. The only way I survived at the roller rink was because they made me wear a giant chicken costume."

Hurley chuckled. "We had one of those at Mr. Cluck's. I never had to wear it, though."

"It was kind of embarrassing, but as long as I didn't take the head off, no one realized it was me," said Harper. "Is Mr. Cluck's in Fandom or Santa Monica?"

"Santa Monica. The chicken place I worked the summer before I came here," Hurley explained.

"Too bad. I would have said it was destiny if there was a chicken place on the island," said Harper. "Though I guess it leaves me free to pursue my true passion: fashion."

"Cool," Hurley said. "I... yeah, it's not really my thing. But I'm sure you'll find folks interested here."

"I'm sure I will," said Harper, grinning.

"Awesome," Hurley said. "So... need any music?"

"What do you recommend?" asked Harper.

"Pick up the Teal Deer album," Hurley said. "It was students from here, kinda awesome."

"I can't think of a better way to start out at a new school!" said Harper. "I'll take it."

Hurley found a copy behind the counter and set it out for her. "On the house," he said. "And you ever need, like, a friend or help or anything, let me know. That's what I'm for."

"Aww, thanks. You know, you're really sweet, Hurley," said Harper, smiling.

"Thanks," Hurley said. "You're pretty cool, yourself."
