Caritas - Saturday Evening [Open]

Marion had completely forgotten that people were arriving today and thus had no problem with sitting in the back room organizing stuff while throwing Tino out to the wolves.

Not literally.

Mina Harker sat at the bar, and got a Shirley Temple from Tino.

Well, she'd actually asked for a cocktail, without alcohol. Tino obliged with the Shirley Temple.

She sat, sipping the drink pleasantly, glad to be out of the apartment.

Mary figured she hadn't been out for a while, so she popped into Caritas. Spotting Mina with a Shirley Temple, she came right over. It was usually easier to hang out with someone who wasn't drinking alcohol either.

"Hi Mina! Oooh, that looks good. Tino, I'll have one of those Shirley Temples as well."

"Mary," Mina greeted. She wasn't planning on being all... moral judge, this evening. "How does the evening find you?"

"Not bad. Things were kind of quiet at the hotel, so I thought I'd check out how business was over here," said Mary, flashing a smile at Tino as he brought her drink. She probably didn't notice that Tino's gaze was focused on her chest.

"Yes, of course," Mina said. "Are you acquainted with the staff?"

"The previous owner was a really good friend," said Mary. "We were, uh, very well acquainted."

"I imagine you are very acquainted with many of the men of town," Mina said.

Oooooh, burn.

Mary might have missed the meaning of Mina's statement. "I've got quite a few male friends in town," she said. "It's nice, though. It keeps me from being lonely."

"Oh, I don't know," Mina said. "There is something to said about independence."

"I seem to be familiar with independence," said Mary. "Living on my own again took some getting used to, but so far, I'm surviving."

"Good," Mina said. "A woman who must rely on others is a detriment to our gender."

"My fiancé relied on me quite a bit when we lived together. Sometimes I worry about how he's managing on his own," said Mary.

"Oh, men who cannot manage alone are simply to be expected," Mina said with a smirk.

Mary laughed. "I guess so. All I know is that I've been relying on myself since I was 15, and somehow, I managed to do okay."

"That is quite amiable," Mina said. "I hope you were not required to do anything... unpolite to remain safe."

"Oh no, never," Mary started to say, then hesitated.

There was that whole mess with her father's murder, but she had her reasons.

"That is good," Mina said. "I hardly understand the need to dress so... lightly, but I am glad to hear you are woman of good morals, none the less."

"My dress? Oh!" said Mary with an embarrassed chuckle. "I forget sometimes. You see, I grew up in Las Vegas. Everyone there dresses like this."

"Las Vegas," Mina said. "I am not familiar with this place."

Mary had many people from other worlds, so the comment didn't phase her. "It's a desert town where gambling is legal. It's a very popular destination," said Mary. "I worked as a special event director there before becoming the hotel manager of one of the larger resort casinos."

"Interesting," Mina said. "Such activities were normally the vices of those who dreamed of becoming rich beyond their station. Criminals and factory workers."

"Well, we certainly get those, but there's also a lot of bored millionaires who gamble for entertainment," said Mary.

"I see," Mina said. "Games of cards and races, I suppose."

"Not to mention dice games," added Mary. "In fact, craps is one of the biggest draws because it can be very exciting."

Mina smirked. "I take it you yourself are a gambler."

"Not really," said Mary. "When you work for the casinos, you're forbidden from actually gambling. They don't want you manipulating the games."

"That is quite scrupulous of them," Mina said.

"It's all very tightly controlled by the government," said Mary. "Any hint of impropriety and they shut you down. There are people who run private games, but they have to be very, very careful. It's too much risk for me."

Mina was actually impressed. "It seems they do their best to keep gambling as clean as possible."

"Despite the reputation for being Sin City, they try very hard to keep Las Vegas very clean," said Mary. "Plus I worked for Ed Deline, one of the strictest men in the industry."

"Sin City?" Mina said. "Is that what they call it?"

She found that amusing.

"The name seems to have stuck," said Mary. "There's quite a few vices other than gambling that visitors can partake of."

"A modern day Sodom or Gomorrah, perhaps," Mina said with a quiet chuckle.

Tully had been working outdoors that day, and could really use a drink to warm him up. Rum and coke to start.

Arya happened to be back at Caritas, having ordered ale from Tino. Really, she'd drink something else one of these days. When someone offered a suggestion, that is.

Seriously. One second I was watching the Phantom Menace and the next thing you know, I'm asleep.
