Finally, Kaylee had a real project. A flying car!

Sure, she had...virtually no idea where to start. But whatever, she'd figure that out as she went along. Today she was doing research on the...internet thingie.

And okay, maybe research also meant shopping for pretty underwear, too. It was just so easy to find the sites!

Ben poked his head through the door. "Hi!"

The swelling on his cheeks had gone down, but he still looked far from 100 percent.

Kaylee practically bolted over to the door. "Ben! Ben, you're okay!"

She got a better look at him, skidding to a halt. "...are you totally okay? Can I give you a hug?"

"I never say no to hugs from you," he said with a small smile. "Just don't squeeze too tight?"

Kaylee reached out and hugged him rather more gently than she really wanted to. "Oh, I'm so happy t'see you."

"The feeling's definitely mutual," he said into her shoulder.

"I was scared for you," Kaylee admitted quietly.

"You shouldn't have been," Ben said. "I'm fine. Really."

"Ben, I ain't stupid," Kaylee said, looking at him. "D'you wanna sit down or anything?"

The need to not look like an idiot in front of Kaylee warred with him actually being an idiot in gym and overstressing himself.

"Yeah," he finally said, blushing.

Kaylee took his hand and led him over to a chair. "I guess it didn't go good?"

"It could've gone worse," Ben said, sitting down with a quiet sigh, "but not a lot worse."

"Oh, bao bei," Kaylee said, biting her lip. "'Least you're okay."

Ben flashed her a smile. "I'll be as good as new in a few weeks," he promised.

Kaylee tilted her head. "D'you wanna talk about it?"

Ben shook his head. "You won't like me any more."

"Nothin' could change me likin' you," she said softly.

"You say that now," Ben said, focusing on his hands, "but I did some bad stuff when I was home."

"An' you're still you," Kaylee said quietly, squeezing his hand. And no matter how much it scared her, she'd hide it.

"Following the family business," Ben said hollowly, "killing people and getting caught."

He shrugged. "Mom and Dad never got caught."

"And what happened when you got caught?" she asked quietly.

"Dad got me out," he replied. He knew that wasn't what she meant.

"Out of where?" she asked softly.

"Secret room my cousin had," Ben said quietly. "I was a guest there for a few days."

Kaylee leaned to hug him again, her brain processing that faster than she would have preferred. She'd rather have not understood what he meant.

Ben held on a little tighter this time. "It's okay," he tried to assure her.
