Atlas Gym [early morning]

Anakin wasn't going to let the hat that had appeared on his head the moment he stepped onto the causeway affect his weekly training session with his grandson.

Even if lightsaber practice with it on was going to look completely ridiculous. He stretched, he jumped up and down, and the hat stayed on.

He threatened to set it on fire and the hat stayed on.

Finally, Anakin settled for a grumpy expression on his face to assure everyone that dammit, he meant to be wearing this stupid hat, and waited for Ben to arrive.

Ben came racing into the gym, took one look at his grandfather and burst out laughing.

"Nice hat."

No, it didn't matter that he had one, too.

Anakin glared. "You have one, too."

"But I look better in it," Ben decided, taking his cloak off and dropping it on a chair before settling on the floor to warm up a bit.

"You really need to check--" Anakin began.

"--my attitude," Ben finished for him. "You mention it every week."

[sith_happened]

"Then you should be working a little harder on it," Anakin retorted. "Or at least use it on someone who isn't me."

Ben nodded and stood up, unclipping his lightsaber from his belt. "What are we working on today?"

[sith_happened]

"Blocking," Anakin said. "When you go in close, you forget about defense. A Jedi isn't limited to a lightsaber as his weapon. You need to remember that."

"I'm also pretty good with a rifle," Ben said a touch acerbically, standing across from his grandfather.

[sith_happened]

"I'm not teaching you how to be an assassin, young one," Anakin replied, igniting his weapon. "I'm teaching you to be a Jedi."

"I'm both," Ben said, lunging towards Anakin and hoping that maybe today would be the day he finally got the man to move his feet.

Anakin moved his weapon, but not his feet. He poked at Ben's stomach with a bit of the Force. "There," he said. "Keep the lightsaber lower. You're overcompensating for my height."

Ben adjusted his stance and tried again, lightsaber blade whizzing towards Anakin's chest.

"Much better," Anakin said, though his feet still didn't have to move to parry Ben's motion. "Focus on my eyes. Which way am I going to move next?"

"The way I don't want you to," Ben said with a tight smile as he listened to the Force, trying to figure out which way Anakin would go next.

His lightsaber lashed out.

"Impressive," Anakin said as Ben's lightsaber countered his move almost before he'd made it. "You've learned quickly."

"I learned to be a sniper in a morning," Ben said, lashing out with his foot towards his grandfather's knee. "I can't even make you move."

Anakin took a step back to avoid Ben's kick. "You have now," he replied with a small smile. "Well done."

Naturally, being Anakin, he wasn't going to leave it with Ben in control. He slashed his blade down towards his grandson's head.

Ben hit the ground hard to avoid having his head snicked off. "Hey!"

"Don't get angry," Anakin lectured. "Get better. Anger is a useless emotion, especially during a lightsaber battle. Things are moving too fast to take time wondering about the fairness of a maneuver."

He'd taken that little speech entirely from Obi-Wan.

Ben sighed as he pushed up off the ground. "A new record for you," he commented. "You went a good five minutes without mentioning anger."

[sith_happened]

"Until you tell me how close you came, I don't know what I'm working with," Anakin said. "So we do this."

"Close enough that my dad sent me to you for lessons," Ben snapped. "Okay? And don't tell me about controlling my temper! I've read all about you!"

[sith_happened]

"Which means I might have a fairly good idea how to pull back from killing people for displeasing me," Anakin said. "I'm not the man your father knew."

Ben fought back the impulse to kick his grandfather good and hard in the shins. "Fine. If you tell me to count to ten, I'm going to hit something."
