The Gig [Tuesday]

Aravis was only mildly tense when she opened the Gig on Tuesday. Only mildly. It had been a frustrating evening in last night, and so...yes, she was a bit frustrated. Nothing interesting.

And she'd probably only snap a little if anyone irritated her.

Ben came in, the traditional cups of hot chocolate (cocoa?) in his hands. "Leto's going to let me play with knives!" he said happily.

Aravis gratefully took the hot chocolate. "Why?"

"Because they are astral," Ben said, "and they fly through the air and I'll have to deflect them with the Force and some different knives!"

"This is true," Aravis said thoughtfully. "You might cut yourself, though, you know."

"I won't," Ben said airily. "Besides, Leto thinks Granddad would hold him responsible if I got hurt. I think Granddad would blame me for trying more than I could safely handle."

"I think he'd hold both of you responsible for being idiots," she said.

Ben laughed. "That sounds like him," he agreed. "But I'm not interested in following the family tradition of losing limbs."

"I'd prefer you didn't," she said, shaking her head.

"Not on this planet, anyway," Ben teased. "I don't think they're advanced enough in prostetics."

"Pros-what?" she asked, confused.

"Fake limb replacements," Ben rephrased. "Like what my dad has."

"They're very lucky to have anything like that here at all," she noted.

Ben nodded. "In a galaxy with lightsabers, we're pretty good at fixing the problems that being careless leaves us."

"At least those would seal the wound immediately," she observed. "We aren't quite so lucky with swords."

Ben made a face. "Yeah, I can imagine," he said quietly. "Is it considered a mark of a good swordsman to take off the hand rather than to just kill the person?"

Maybe the Jedi were just odd.

"No, that's considered clumsy," she said, looking mildly alarmed.

Ben gave a little shrug. "We're strange, then," he said. "The thought is that any idiot can kill another idiot. We're supposed to be a little more precise."

"We tend to think that's a bit crueler than simply killing someone. To force them to endure the agony of healing, to not allow them to die with honor and to ensure that they'll have to live minus a hand or something. It's a mark of poor swordsmanship for us, in nearly every instance."

"Granddad did it to Dad," Ben said. "To show that he could kill him, and chose not to."

He paused. "My family's odd."

"You make me feel mine might be normal," she said, smiling.

He smiled back. "Yours isn't normal," he teased. "I think we'd know normal if we saw it, though."

"I doubt it," she replied. "Everyone seems to have their own definition."

Ben took a thoughtful sip from his cup. "Good point," he said. "I imagine my version of normal includes a lot more people shooting at me than yours."

"Generally they don't let me out near the arrows when they're being fired," she agreed.

"You use arrows?" Ben's eyes lit up. "Can you shoot them?"

She shook her head apologetically. "I've never learned, unfortunately."

"It's not a problem," Ben said, smiling. "Just me being curious."
