MHA Poolside, Saturday Evening

With the weather finally fucking warm enough to be outside without fear of freezing, Loki was doing exactly that. Even with it being dark, it was still warm enough to drag his lazy ass poolside. Of course, he'd lit a few of those deck lamps to provide some light and had put smaller candles on each of the tables around the pool to create even more. It wasn't Christmas lights but it looked pretty fucking good.

He wasn't planning on doing much besides sitting out there and relaxing but he figured this was a step up from sprawling like a lump of nothing on his couch even if his couch was comfortable. Maybe he should have just dragged his couch out here.

Next time.

This time, he was content with his lounge chair, his many bottles of water, and his pool. Maybe he'd even get in. Or maybe not. He liked leaving things up to fate.

Fucking fate.

"Actually that he didn't think he'd be busy was the first thing he said," Sarah said with a slight laugh. "I consoled him by telling him he might get some divorce cases from all the marriages it sounds like they had on the cruise."

"I find it amazing that all you need to do with this generation of teenagers is throw them on a boat and they'll get hitched," Ben said. "It's probably just a phase, though."

"Maybe it goes with the whole Disney Channel, purity ring thing?" Sarah tried. "Or maybe it really was a love boat. Could be kind of romantic."

"At least until their parents find out and murder them," Ben pointed out.

"That's the problem with young love," Sarah answered. "Everything's great until parents smash it to bits."

"Or until somebody decides they want to see someone else, or someone ends up in jail, or something," Ben said.

"Or somebody leaves town," Sarah said. "I moved a lot, growing up."

"That can still be blamed on the parents, though," Ben said. "Unless you just kept getting expelled, and you don't seem the type."

Sarah snorted. "I played violin," she said, "and was on honor roll. I was very much not the type. It was my dad's job."

"Was he in the military or something?" Ben asked.

"Salesman with itchy feet," Sarah said briefly, if inaccurately. "What about yours?"

Peter's parents were spies, apparently, which would be a weird thing to bring up in casual conversation. But there was no way Ben was going to use the Jackal as a basis for his fictional parent, so it was time to outright lie. "Lawyers. It's where I get my best lawyer jokes."

"Want to tell me one?" Sarah asked with a grin. "I'm terrible at telling jokes myself."

"Sure. What's a criminal lawyer?" Ben asked.

"I'll assume the answer isn't the dictionary definition."

Ben nodded. "Redundant."

Sarah chuckled -- he'd actually surprised her. "Okay, that was a pretty good one."

"I like to think that it's really in the delivery. I've spent years trying to convince people that I'm funny, and I think I've finally mastered it," Ben said.
