Turtle Wexler heaved a great sigh. One of these days, she was very sure that Mister Apu would learn that that other cash register was absolutely no good and she wouldn't have to come in and drag out the right one (which was, in effect, very colorful and very plastic and had lots of large buttons and cool sounds). Today was not one of these days, but Turtle had fixed that, dragged out the toy one, set it up (thanks to the help of a chair) on the counter and got ready for a Very Important Day at the store.

Today's Squishy Flavors: Chocolate Chip Cookies, Grape Judas, Brussel Sprouts EW!

Ned stomped in, a tiny puppy (http://www.puppiesden.com/pics/1/golden-retriever-puppy6.jpg) following behind him. He quietly perused the shelves before coming up to Turtle.

"Do you gots pamcake mix?"

Turtle's head bobbed in a nod. "Of course we do," she said. "We've got everything here. Are you going to make pancakes for your puppy?"

"Digby doesn't like pamcakes," Ned informed her smartly. "He likes doggie food. I should get some of that too. I could make you pamcakes, if you want. I'm making lots!"

Or, three or four.

"You should get doggie food," Turtle agreed with a nod. "Especially if he doesn't like pancakes. But I'll be happy to eat the pancakes he doesn't like. I'd be willing to trade, pancake mix and doggie food for pancakes, although you'll need something else, too, because that's not even."

"Trade?" Ned looked down at Digby and Digby, seemingly thinking the worst, retreated back to the store door. No way was he getting traded. "Whatcha want?"

"Well," Turtle said. "Usually, you trade money. Do you have money? You can trade less money than usual because I'll get pancakes."

Marco had gone 'sploring at some point after getting too much sugar. "TURTLE!"

"I gotta..." He dug into his pocket and pulled out twenty three cents. "This! Money! Is that 'nough?"

"Maaaaaaar-cooooooo!" Turtle greeted him back. "If you get any of your gross boy cooties on my merchandise, you have to buy it. It's a law."

"Let me see," Turtle said, holding out her hand, very professional-like.

"I don't have cooties!" Marco said with an exaggerated eye roll.

"Yeah, you do," Turtle informed him. "You're a boy. All boys have cooties. If you don't have cooties, then you must be a girl. It's basic science, you know."

"My Mom said I don't and she's always right!" Marco informed her with a huff.

Ned dropped the change in Turtle's hand and then bit his lip nervously, hoping it was enough. He'd have to really dig for something else to trade.

"Your mom," Turtle informed him back, "must think you're a girl, then."

"DOES NOT!" Marco turned a little purple in the face there. "YOU'RE MEAN!"

Turtle ceremoniously dropped it on the counter and counted it out quickly.

"Hm," she said. "It's cutting it close. Do you have anything else? Or you can just make me extra pancakes."

"I'm not mean, Marco! I'm just telling you how it is."

"I dunno." Ned reached deep into his pockets, trying to find something more. He came out with a pen cap. "Um, this?"

And now, she should be very proud about making a six-year-old cry.

Turtle wrinkled her nose a little. "If it were still attached to a pen, maybe," she said. "As it stands, I'd rather just have the extra pancakes, please."

"Oh, geez!" Turtle rolled her eyes.

"Marco! You can't cry! Girls cry! You are not making a very good case here!"
