Graduation Brunch: The Park, Sunday, mid-morning to mid-afternoon

A banner, the letters wrapped with fresh spring flowers, hung from the trees, spelling out CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2009! No missing letters or anything.

Spread out across the park were plenty of tables and chairs, some under the shade of picnic shelters, some out on the grass in the sunshine. For those who felt like getting back to nature, there were even red and white checked blankets spread out in a few areas for old-fashioned picnic-y goodness. Lack of ants not guaranteed.

The long table that ran along next to the picnic shelters was laden with a vast moddable array of traditional brillig-y food, including fruit, veggie snacks, breakfast pastries, sandwiches for the especially hungry or those who arrived more toward the unch end of brunch, and a wide variety of J,GoB-catered desserts. Drinks included coffee, tea, juices and soft drinks, and while there were plates provided, there were also wee picnic-basket-shaped trays for carrying things back to your seat, wherever that might be.

A space had been cleared for dancing, if people cared to do more than just listen to the light music being played through the speakers, and there was also an area set aside for outdoor games of croquet, horseshoes, or frisbee.

Everybody's welcome. Come celebrate with the Class of '09!

[OOC: Wait for the OCD. Don't make Eliza Doolittle have to cut a bitch. OPEN! And no one had to get cut! It's a good day!]

"I can kill you with my brain." She tilted her head, smiling a little. No, she couldn't, but she could stab him with her wings and cut this throat open. It was an encouraging thought.
bitchprince: (and where did you come up with that one?)

Yeah, more staring.

"I really doubt that," he said, with a disbelieving laugh.

"You doubt, but you don't know for sure." She shrugged. "Or I can cut your chest open, but I shouldn't here. Too obvious, too much mess." She picked up the apple and began to peel it. "Why are you here?"

With his 'Arthur is in danger of a woman trying to murder him again' senses tingling, Merlin found himself taking up a spot just behind the man. Well, that or he had found pears to bring Arthur and had just picked the right time to arrive.

Something had flashed behind Arthur's eyes, and his hand had slipped down to the hilt of his sword. Merlin's arrival was a slight distraction, though, and so he merely said, "I really don't think so," and cast the boy a look on the next. "We're done here."

He didn't take kindly to being threatened.

River was just trying to be sociable, but unfortunately her interests were a little odd, perhaps. Still, people could answer the questions she asked even if they never spoke the words. She was chewing on the long strip of apple peel when Merlin showed up, and as Arthur gave her a dismissive reply her attention shifted to the servant.

"I wouldn't have asked you to dance anyway," she told Arthur, but her eyes were on Merlin. "Do you dance? There's a different drumbeat in your mind, underneath the surface. Wouldn't dip my wings into it."

"Dance?" Okay, so Merlin could be a bit dim sometimes. He took a slightly protective step toward Arthur, watching the girl as if he could figure it all out.

"No one's going to dance," Arthur said, "You've clearly lost your mind and your handler. If you need help finding them, then say so. Otherwise, leave us be." He was still more than ready to fight, if she pushed it - to subdue her.

"I'm sure you'd step on my feet," River told Arthur, then turned to Merlin again. "Do you dance?" she repeated. "I have a war to fight, but I'm on holiday." No, she wasn't, but that didn't matter.

"Not with you," Merlin replied in a tone that managed to surprise himself.

And Arthur, at that, who had to make an actual effort not to spin his head around and look at him. "Merlin's my servant," he said, trying not to sound too confused or too wary - of her, because he still seemed incapable of showing anything like that towards Merlin. "His actions are my responsibility. You have your answer. Go."

"But who serves who?" River sliced her apple in half, then picked up one half in each hand as she got to her feet. "Questions can be answered in many ways, even reluctantly. Thank you." Not that any of them had given her any useful information, but politeness never hurt.

"They can also be asked in better ways," Merlin replied, not taking his eyes off her. "Lady."

Arthur's mouth set into a thin line. He'd dismissed her. She was to leave now. Subconsciously, he leaned backwards, towards Merlin.

"There was no need," River told Merlin, ignoring Arthur as he fell silent. Then she was unable to hold back a giggle. "Am not a lady. I'm a secret weapon. You are quite a pair."

She turned and walked away from the table.

Merlin watched her go, reaching over slightly to Arthur's arm. The one still on his sword. "You attract insane women, don't you?" He remarked, words far more joking than his tone.

Arthur rolled his eyes. "I attract all women, Merlin," he said, which was as much to defuse the moment in any way he could as anything else.

His fingers passed away from the sword, however, and found a little perch on the arm rest of his seat.

"Generally ones that want to kill you," Merlin pointed out, pulling his hand back. Sophia, Nimueh, Lady Helen...

"The only woman I know of who's attracted to me and fits that description would be Morgana," Arthur said, a bit dryly, "and I'm fairly certain that her ambitions end at petty sadism."

He really had no idea most of the time.

"Of course, sire." He was just going to let Arthur live in blissful ignorance.

Arthur leaned over to pick up his glass again, but his eyes flicked back into the direction River had gone in. He was still a bit wary, yes, but he made an effort not to show it as he sank back into his chair. "She seemed oddly interested in you."

"She did," Merlin replied, not voicing why he assumed so.

[personal profile] bitchprince 2009-05-03 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"She claimed to have powers of the mind," he said, and then shifted his head to look at the boy again. "Do you know anything about that?"

They were just not going to discuss how Arthur was asking Merlin's opinion more and more these days, thank you.

"I would assume she meant my magic," Merlin said carefully, sitting in the chair next to Arthur. "I've... been able to hear things others could not."
bitchprince: (...que?)

"Could you please be more cryptic, Merlin?" Arthur asked him, dryly.
