fandomtownies | Graduation Brunch: The Park, Sunday, mid-morning to mid-afternoon

A banner, the letters wrapped with fresh spring flowers, hung from the trees, spelling out CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2009! No missing letters or anything.

Spread out across the park were plenty of tables and chairs, some under the shade of picnic shelters, some out on the grass in the sunshine. For those who felt like getting back to nature, there were even red and white checked blankets spread out in a few areas for old-fashioned picnic-y goodness. Lack of ants not guaranteed.

The long table that ran along next to the picnic shelters was laden with a vast ~~moddable~~ array of traditional brillig-y food, including fruit, veggie snacks, breakfast pastries, sandwiches for the especially hungry or those who arrived more toward the unch end of brunch, and a wide variety of J,GoB-catered desserts. Drinks included coffee, tea, juices and soft drinks, and while there were plates provided, there were also wee picnic-basket-shaped trays for carrying things back to your seat, wherever that might be.

A space had been cleared for dancing, if people cared to do more than just listen to the light music being played through the speakers, and there was also an area set aside for outdoor games of croquet, horseshoes, or frisbee.

Everybody's welcome. Come celebrate with the Class of '09!

"Busy. Hard," he admitted, wincing. "The school, not the life. Talyn's into putting things in his mouth. Aeryn gets a little concerned when that includes things like the water pistol."

Kawalsky grinned again. "With parents like you guys, it's no wonder your kid's getting into trouble already. You liking it? Being a dad I mean."

"There's absolutely nothing better," he said immediately. "I don't get that much sleep but I don't even care."

"So not much has changed then? I don't remember anyone getting much sleep when we were here."

"Different reasons but no, not much has changed," he said and laughed. "I sleep in a bigger bed!"

"And you don't have to check under it for gremlins every morning!"

"Unless I've had a particularly vivid dream," he said. "Then, I do. Sometimes, I wish those guys were there with me. I'd take them on campus and release them."

"If you let 'em loose in a frat house, how would anyone tell the difference?"

"Depends on the bite," John said. "If they were all suddenly super smart? It might make a difference."

"You make a good point. You could probably make good money out of gremlin venom."

"There's gotta be a law against gremlin exploitation somewhere," John said. "That or they'd all come after me."

"And set up camp under your bigger bed," he nodded. "Every morning they'd try chomping at your ankle. It'd make for an interesting school year though."

"Aeryn would frelling kill me," he said. "So, that'd be no fun."

"Well not for you. How's she doing?"

"Tired," John said. "She works a lot and then spends her free time with Talyn. I think she needs a vacation."

"I'd offer bandits for her to come and beat up for fun, but it's a long way to travel."

"I bet the gesture would be appreciated," he laughed. "She has to stop herself from beating up customers. Gets her twitchy."

"Maybe you guys should move to Michigan. I don't know if it's still around, but there used to be this restaurant where you go for the food and the abuse. The staff rip into you as part of its Detroit charm. She could really let loose there!"

"They let you get physical?" John asked, amused. "Or just verbal? Verbal might appease her some!"

"I think you can throw stuff, but no damaging the customers because of lawsuits. Verbal though? I've heard some things come out of those waitresses' mouths that embarrassed even me."

"Oh wow." Aeryn would love that. "Aeryn's military is a lot more...I think she'd be able to take it. I'd be hiding."

"I think if I went back, all I'd be able to do is laugh. Not sure I could take someone seriously while they were asking me if I wanted fucking ketchup with my goddamned burger or if I was too stupid to figure that one out for myself."

"It'd be even funnier if they did that but had to do with a smile," John decided. "Couldn't take them seriously then."

"Can you imagine how things would change if waitresses were allowed to talk like that all the time? People might not go out to eat as much, everyone would want to be a waitress and there could even be bidding wars on the snarkiest waitresses. Maybe even a draft!"

"It'd give getting takeout a whole new look," John agreed. "Probably lower the stress levels on waiters and waitresses too. You know they gotta hate having to turn the other cheek all the time."
