fandomtownies | Graduation Brunch: The Park, Sunday, mid-morning to mid-afternoon

A banner, the letters wrapped with fresh spring flowers, hung from the trees, spelling out CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2009! No missing letters or anything.

Spread out across the park were plenty of tables and chairs, some under the shade of picnic shelters, some out on the grass in the sunshine. For those who felt like getting back to nature, there were even red and white checked blankets spread out in a few areas for old-fashioned picnic-y goodness. Lack of ants not guaranteed.

The long table that ran along next to the picnic shelters was laden with a vast ~~moddable~~ array of traditional brillig-y food, including fruit, veggie snacks, breakfast pastries, sandwiches for the especially hungry or those who arrived more toward the unch end of brunch, and a wide variety of J,GoB-catered desserts. Drinks included coffee, tea, juices and soft drinks, and while there were plates provided, there were also wee picnic-basket-shaped trays for carrying things back to your seat, wherever that might be.

A space had been cleared for dancing, if people cared to do more than just listen to the light music being played through the speakers, and there was also an area set aside for outdoor games of croquet, horseshoes, or frisbee.

Everybody's welcome. Come celebrate with the Class of '09!

"Talk to me Thursday afternoon," she grumbled. "My exams start at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning."

"I don't envy you," Peter said. "But good luck. It's nice that you could come even in the middle of finals."

"Like I'd miss my friends graduating? As if!" Isabel was horrified at the thought. "Besides, we had study week this past week. So instead of drinking and carousing like most of the people in my dorm, I actually studied."

"Is that even allowed in college?" Peter teased. "Especially in Vegas?"

"Sometimes I have my doubts. They all think I'm nuts for not being such a party animal," she shrugged. "But after everything here, and out there," Isabel pointed her finger towards the sky, "I don't know. I guess I just find other things more important that what bar has the cheapest drinks."

"Are you liking your classes at least?" Peter asked.

"Oh classes are great," she replied with genuine happiness. "I'm still in all the intro courses, but everything seems interesting. Plus this summer I'm going to get a job working in the business. As part of the degree requirements, I need to work two thousand hours in a related field before graduation. I need to start now."

"Wow," Peter said. "I'm seriously impressed. Got any idea what job you'll be taking?"

"Starting out? God help me but I'm probably going to wind up as a waitress in one of the banquet areas of one of the hotels." Isabel was not exactly thrilled with this idea.

"Here's hoping you get lots of tips," Peter offered.

"And not too many bad passes. I doubt they'd appreciate me TKing someone into a wall." Not that she'd ever do anything like that.

"Or changing their hair color," Peter said with a grin. "Or writing a reminder all over their skin."

"I'd never..." Except she couldn't help laughing as she said it, because they both knew she had.

"Neither would I," Peter replied in kind.

"We're both completely innocent," Isabel grinned, still laughing. "It's good to see you Peter. I've missed you."

"Missed enough for a hug?" Peter asked.

"I could be persuaded." But no persuasion was really necessary since she was already reaching out for him.

Which was good because Peter was also reaching out for her.
