Ned felt a little lighter on his feet today considering Kaylee wasn't a raccoon anymore and he didn't have to worry about her hurting her tiny animal self when he turned his back. Today, he could just concentrate on baking. Well, baking and mulling over a few things he'd told Turtle yesterday. He still had time, definitely, but it was getting less and less each day.

Still, pie as a future was enough to buoy him for the day.

Mile High Apple Pie? That sounded good, especially after going so long without sweets. Of course, now, Haley's junk food policy was long gone. She had decided that instead of torturing herself by holding back, she would add a couple minutes onto her daily workout routine and indulge as she pleased.

She stepped into Luke's Diner and took a seat at the counter. "Is there a difference between regular Apple Pie and Mile High Apple Pie> Besides the latter rhyming?"

"A size difference, yes," Ned told her, nodding. "One is very large and the other is the regular pie shape."

"Oh, well, I'll take a very large piece of pie." A beat. "Please."

"A good choice," Ned agreed, disappearing into the kitchen before returning with a piece of pie (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/paula-deen-savannah-high-apple-pie-recipe/index.html). "It's a favorite of mine."

"Thanks." Haley said as she took the offered pie and had a bite. "Mmhmm, I haven't had decent pie since...I left Texas actually. I mean, I'm sure there's good pie outside of Texas, but I haven't seen it."

"You've been deprived then," Ned told her, almost shocked. "The enjoyment of the pie really depend on who's making it."

"Really? Whoever made this is definitely deserving of a trophy or something in that case." Haley asked before another bite. "Because it is just right." She admitted with a grin.

"I made that," he said, shy but proud. "Pies are kind of a specialty."

"Apparently." Haley teased. "Haley." She said by way of introduction as she extended her free hand.

"Ned," he said, wiping his hand off on his apron before shaking her hand. "Nice to meet you, Haley. Glad you like the pie."

"Nice to meet you too." Haley said with a nod before another quick bite. "Been baking long?" It almost tasted too good to be his own recipe; it tasted like passed down apple pie, perfected a little more each generation or something.

"Since I was nine," he said, nodding. "I used to watch my mother cook and then spent a lot of time cooking when I was in boarding school."

"Ooh, boarding school." Haley said with an uncomfortable look. "I came close to that at one point. Happy to see you survived, baking skills and all." She had heard of numerous cases where people had just complete lost their minds at boarding school.

"It was about the only thing I did," he said with a wince. "It wasn't fun."

"Sorry." Haley said sincerely with a nod. "If it makes you feel any better, I did get sentenced to serve time at a hardcore gymnastics academy, which was tough because everyone in the sport practically already knew my name and despised me." Luckily, that changed and she actually realized she loved gymnastics from the whole experience, but it still sucked the first few weeks. Plus, no matter what she does now, she was always be known as the girl who walked out on worlds.

"I didn't know pie was on a gymnastics sort of diet," he said. "I thought it'd be banned."

"Mine too," he agreed with a small smile. "It's very durable, apples. There's so many varieties of apple pie that I don't think I'll ever run out."

"Uh, about a year," he said thoughtfully. "Over a year now. I graduated in May."

"Wow, a year. I just got here like a month ago." Haley said with some surprise before another bite. "Like it here?"

"It's better than other places I've been," he said, shrugging. "So, it's been...a decent place."

"Gremlins never got a hold of you, right?" Because she had been hearing a lot about those little guys, but she had yet to see one or hear from anyone actually attacked by one.

"Is there more really weird stuff aside from the gremlins that I should know about?" Haley asked, because she could only remember being told about the gremlins.

"There is some...stuff." He didn't really want to scare a new person but there was stuff. "Um, nothing harmful. I came out of it okay."

"Seriously?" Haley asked, not in a condescending tone, but just surprised. She honestly wasn't expecting that. "I thought you were going to say something like Australian kangaroos hopping around for a day like the moose that were just here, but that's...interesting; good to know."
