Cafe Fina, Sunday

Today was going to be a very interesting day at Cafe Fina.

Today was going to be the day that the dishes devoted to curing Zack of his uncultured small-town ways and his terrible lack of knowledge regarding all things kitchen-related.

Today, they were going to pick the specials! Only the finest in French cuisine at Cafe Fina this Sunday! And then they were going to make Zack sample each item!

Today's Specials:
Coq au Vin
Escargots
Bœuf Bourguignon
Crêpes Suzette

Sure, Zack had been a little leery about being presented a plate full of snails, but he managed to get through the rest of the meal with minimum fuss before actually turning his attention to the escargot. It took a bit of fiddling, but he finally managed to figure out the tongs and get one piece into his mouth without freaking out and running out the door.

"Hey, guys! This is pretty good!" The dishes heaved a collective sigh of relief. "Can I have some ketchup for this?"

... And that was when the dishes gave up. Zack was a completely lost cause.

The dishes will love you forever if you can order French cuisine and eat it too!

"I'm going to have the crepes, but I don't think you have to always order the special." Momoko pushed through the door with an eager grin. She wasn't actually dragging Shilo behind her, but... well, Momoko was a bit excited to talk more with her new roommate and she hadn't been to the Fina in ages, so she kind of was at least pulling on her hand as they entered.

"Come on, come on! I wonder if the person working today is someone I know? Oh, there's a table! Let's go!"

Shilo kept up with Momoko as best she could. "Maybe the bo... boeuf? Bourguignon?" She followed her to the table and sat down. "French isn't my strong point, so I hope our waiter isn't fluent, or I'll be laughed at."

Momoko sat and set her feet to swinging. "I don't know French at all! Well, except how to say some of the dessert names. But unless they've got some really really new staff, they all speak English! Which is totally weird since they're, like, napkins and dishes and stuff. But then, this is Fandom!"

Blink. Blink blink blink.

"Did you just say that the staff... are napkins and dishes?"

"Ah! Sorry! I forgot to warn you!" Momoko slapped her forehead with her palm. "Yep! There are some humans who work at the Fina, but mostly not. They're really nice, though, and sometimes they even sing and dance!" As if to prove her point, a dish stepped up to take their order and Momoko gave a wave. "Ah! Hi! See, see?"

"He-hello," Shilo offered the dish, and then decided to be adventurous. "What would you recommend today?"

Momoko giggled and sat back as the dish excitedly went through the menu and suggested various things. When the dish paused for breath, Momoko raised a hand. "I'm just having the Crêpes Suzette and a chocolate mousse and a tea, please!"

As the dish grinned and wrote it down, Momoko leaned back onto the table towards Shilo. "Just because I'm getting only dessert doesn't mean you can't order a full meal, okay? I just really like dessert!"

Shilo turned to the dish. "I'll go with the boeuf bourguignon, please. With seltzer water to drink." She then looked back at Momoko and said, "So how are you liking your workshops?"

"You are so going to have to tell me what that is and how it tastes!" Momoko gave Shilo a thumbs up as the dish skipped back to the kitchen with their order. "And my workshops are way way more fun that I thought and somehow a lot more work that my normal classes ever were! Except for Teevee, of course, since all we do is learn about and then watch tv. Did you know that 'crisps' are potato chips? How are yours? Workshops, I mean, not potato chips."

Shilo grinned. "Mine are all pretty good. I'm still a bit terrified of Edna, but I think I'm doing okay by her."

Momoko's eyes grew big. "I wish! I had to redo my sketches because I had capes in almost all of my designs!"

Shilo frowned a little. "Why didn't she let you keep the cape? It's your costume, after all."

Momoko's eyes didn't get much smaller. "Apparently where she's from? Three people got their capes, like, sucked into jet engines and stuff! I didn't even think about that, so I redid them. She was pretty strict about it." She blew a sigh. "It was just decoration, but still."

"Glad I didn't have a cape on mine, then," Shilo replied. And, without thinking, continued with, "I'll have enough trouble keeping my hair on my head."

Momoko blinked. What did that mean, keep her hair on her head? "Your hair?"

Shilo decided to be brave ~~come, come what may~~ and took off her wig. "Don't be startled, okay?" she asked Momoko. "I was sick when I was little, so I lost all my hair. It hasn't grown back since. So I wear this wig."

Momoko was startled. Not everyday someone took their hair off at the table with her. She put her palms on the table and stood up. "Whoah! Are... are you okay?"

Shilo quickly put her wig back on. "Sorry, sorry. Yes, I'm fine. I just thought you ought to know, since we're going to be living together soon."

Momoko sat back down slowly, nodding. "So you're not sick anymore, right? Is it going to come back? Are there signs I should watch for? I know where the clinic is in an emergency, so that's okay. Well, I also know where it is if it's not an emergency, because it doesn't move. Which wouldn't surprise me if it did, but it doesn't. Do you have to take any medications?" Momoko was in full worried-hero/ concerned-sister mode; not so much concerned about the lack of hair as the whole 'I was sick' part.

"I may still have some symptoms, but I'm not as sick as I was," Shilo replied. "And it shouldn't come back." She fought the urge to smile at Momoko's concern: she appreciated it, but it was so cute at the same time. "My watch has a heart rate and blood pressure monitor built in, so if you hear it start beeping or saying 'blood pressure warning', that means that I need to start taking deep breaths and calming myself down. Otherwise I'll faint, and it'll take me a few minutes to come to."

She tried to figure out where she was in the chain of questioning. "I probably won't need to go to the clinic, since it's just a fainting spell. Unless I hit my head on the way down and I'm bleeding, then by all means, get me there. And no, I don't take any medicines for it." Not anymore, anyways.

Momoko made a mental note to always listen for Shilo's watch, but was calmed by Shilo's responses. "Sounds like you've been dealing with..." She waved her hand, since she didn't have a disease to refer to, "...it? for a while. Promise that you'll let me know if you need help, okay? You do have a cell phone, right?"

She hesitated a moment then added, "You know? You look totally different without your hair. Not bad, just not exactly like you. You could totally use that as part of your hero costume!"

"It's a blood disease." Shilo opted against telling Momoko that it was actually the result of her father poisoning her. She then ~~handwavily~~ gave Momoko her cell phone number.

"You think I should get a different wig, for when I'm in my hero costume?" Shilo grinned at the idea. "It could be fun!"

"I was actually thinking you could be bald while you were in costume, but a different wig works, too. Although you might get worried about it falling off and be distracted. You probably have a bunch, right?"

Momoko pulled her Power compact off of her belt and held it up. "This also works as a cell phone, so I always have it on me." She added Shilo's cell number and clapped it closed with a smile. "Call me whenever, okay?"

"Ooh," Shilo replied, putting a hand to her chin and looking thoughtful. "I could put a hood on my costume, and go bald underneath. That's a good thought."

"And much better than me! Even when I transform, I still have all this hair!" Momoko nodded and reached up to tug at her bangs. "Even my style doesn't change much."

"You actually transform?" Shilo marveled. "That would be so cool to see."

Momoko thought about that for a moment. "I don't know. I never really paid attention to the actual transformation. Plus it's really fast. The dress is totally cute, though!"

"Maybe I could get it on camera, so you could see what it looks like," Shilo offered.

"Maybe..." Momoko was intrigued by the idea, and her face showed it. It had been over three years and she'd never really seen herself transform - that was so totally not like her, she thought.

She blew a sigh and sat back in her chair. "It's so weird to be talking about it openly like this! Back home it's a huge secret and I tried to keep it a secret here at first, but then there were the harpies and the zombies and now the Tuesday thing with Arthur and Leto. Plus so many other people have powers here, that it seems normal and there's only the three of us back home!"

Shilo smiled. "I know how it feels. My being bald was a huge secret for me, and... well, the cat's out of the bag now." And the cat's name was Dinah.

"I'm glad you told me! I'd have been a bit weirded out to see you suddenly without hair!" Like, just now. "I never noticed it wasn't real at all! Does anyone else know or is it still a secret?"

Their food was delivered and Momoko set into her crepes with gusto. "Oh! My transforming... it's still a secret back home for a lot of people. Because of my family and friends and stuff. So if you talk to anyone from my home, please don't let them know you know? Especially my sister!" Her parents never called, thank goodness.

"Only Alice," Shilo said. "Her cat started playing with my wig when it fell off one night." She nodded. "And I promise, I won't let anyone know that you told me."

She tried her dinner and smiled. "Oh, this is yummy!"

"I've met Alice - I think we've had some of the same classes and she's in the Tuesday thing. She seems nice but she's a bit quiet, I think. I don't think she's on our floor since I never see her in our common room... Not that we have to only stay in our own common rooms." Momoko looked at the borgenononoengn-y stuff on Shilo's side of the table with interest. "It looks like stew? Is there any celery in it?"

"It's not quite a stew," Shilo replied, taking another mouthful. "And no, no celery."

Momoko swallowed the last of her crepes."Totally looks like stew! A really good one, too! If there's no celery in it, then I'll have to remember to try it sometime!" She nodded. "But not in the summer. Stew has always been more of a winter food for me."

"Yeah, it is a little bit heavy," Shilo said. "But still, really good."

Who will be happy to serve you between mouthfuls. He's on his seventh or eighth crêpe, now. He's a growing boy, after all!
