The Gig, Sunday

Once the horses had been fed for the day, Firekeeper and Blind Seer led them outside as usual. And, as usual, it wasn't long before Blind Seer and Duke began their game of chasing each other around the paddock.

It was brownies, today, and the usual marrow bone for Blind Seer when Tahiri headed over to the Gig and straight out into the paddock.

"Somebody's having fun," she observed, handing over one of the brownies.

Random wrestling matches in the grass probably didn't help much with that, did they?

"Enjoy it while you can," Tahiri opined, sprawling out in the grass. "Force knows, people keep telling me not to grow up too soon."

Tahiri shrugged. "I don't know. I haven't really been a kid, really, not in a while. But Master Skywalker says being an adult is no fun, and I guess he'd know."

Tahiri considered this, chewing on her lower lip until she decided the brownie was better for that. "Are puppies always considered helpless and troublesome? Or do they get treated a little more like adults when they get older? I mean, is it just like you're one thing until all of a sudden you cross the line?"

"Oh, well, that's where I'm getting confused," Tahiri decided. "How do you get to not be a puppy any more? Is there some kind of trial or something?"

The Yuuzhan Vong part of Tahiri's mind could fill in the omitted part well enough. "You and Blind Seer aren't with your pack now," she put in dubiously.

Tahiri nibbled at her brownie throughout what was, for Firekeeper, a surprisingly long speech, then rolled onto her stomach in the grass with her feet up in the air. "So then . . . you're not really puppies any more, are you? At least in a way?"

"Well, now I feel behind the curve," Tahiri said, not complaining really although she was frowning slightly. "You and Blind Seer are adults, Jaina's a full Knight, Ben's one now too, and I'm still just an apprentice."

"Pretty much. It means we're full Jedi, not just learning how to be Jedi, so in a way, yeah." Not that she was under any illusion that either she or Ben were actually adults yet. Tahiri shrugged. "It's not a big deal, anyway. I'm not good enough yet for that."

"And kids here don't get treated the same way as kids back home." Tahiri was blissfully unaware of the fact that most Child Protective Services bureaus on this particular section of Earth would have an absolute fit over her and most of her friends from back home, actually. "Most kids here aren't even allowed to drive until they're sixteen. That's insane. I guess it's different depending on where you're from."

"Most of the people I know have been learning to fly starfighters and speeders since they were old enough to walk." Tahiri rolled her eyes, clearly failing to comprehend why this was a concern for people in this galaxy.

Most of the people Tahiri knew back home had not had normal childhoods by any stretch of the imagination.
