Ned was never more grateful to have a job than today. Normally, he baked when he was stressed. Today, he was baking because it was a convenient outlet for his energy. He was baking because he could pour his energy into something he knew he was good at and because he couldn't spend all day with his girlfriend in bed. Therefore, Ned was focused on his baking, hair tinged with perspiration and really wishing he could be somewhere else doing something else. Damn island.

Irulan entered the diner, its been many years since she's stepped foot in this place and yet... yet it appeared unchanged. Then again, Irulan remembered this was Fandom.

She had stopped for nostalgia but the scent of pies made her happy she decided to enter. "Hello?"

Ned, dirty apron and all, popped his head out of the back room and said, "Hello. Give me just a second and I'll be right with you."

Ned ducked back into the back room, washed his hands and wandered back out. "Sorry about that. Lots and lots of...baking today. How can I help you?"

"It is not a problem," she assured him with a smile. "I would like to have some coffee and some of that baking you are doing. It smells wonderful!"

"Oh, thank you," he said, trying to hide a blush behind his hand even as he went for the coffee. "I, uh, been baking a lot today so there's a lot to choose from. How hungry are you?"

Irulan noted his blush and hid another smile. He seemed such a nice young man.

"Hungry enough, I think, for two slices," Irulan said, "and it has been a while since I have been here I will trust whatever pie you give me."

"Been awhile?" he asked, wandering to the pie selection and thinking which he'd give her. "You've been here before?"

Irulan nodded, "Yes, I was a student here once upon a time."

"Really?" he asked, finally going for a slice of apple and a slice of pecan for her. "I didn't realize this place had been around for so long. I've only been here...going on two years now."

"I am actually unsure how long the school has existed although I do know that sometimes time plays havoc here," Irulan paused and then decided to pursue it. "I was a student here in the year 2007."

Irulan tasted the pecan. She was right, this was delicious!

"Because you're a lot older than just two years, aren't you?" he guessed. "It's 2009 here."

Irulan raised an eyebrow, so in this time she was only gone for two years.

"Yes, I am," she answered then said after tasting the apple pie, "these are excellent!"

"Thank you, pies are kind of my specialty," he said, proud even if a blush spread across his cheeks again. "Are you teaching?"

Irulan smiled again but shook her head. "No, I have had only two students and they were already... challenging. I don't think I could handle a roomful of them. But I am thinking of opening a shop."

"Oh, yeah?" he asked, finally pouring her a cup of coffee and sliding it nearby. "What sort?"

This time Irulan couldn't contain her grin. "I think I shall open a shop for hats. I have an obsession fondness for them although I do not wear them as much."

"Something I know nothing about," he admitted. "Hats tend to make my head look bigger than it is."

"You probably haven't found the right one yet," she told him, tilting her head and imagining what sort of hat fitted him.

So, yes, after decades hats were still srs biznes for Irulan.

"Mine have just been kind of what I could find," he told her. "Uh, baseball caps and a chef's hat once."

"Perhaps we could expand your choices?" She suggested, "although I would have liked to see you in a chef's hat."

"I wore it for a baking competition awhile back," he said and laughed. "It was too big for my head, kept falling in my eyes."

It sounded adorable she refrained telling him so, Irulan suspected it would only embarrass him.

"A competition you won?" She tasted the pecan again, "I cannot imagine you losing not after tasting this!" Irulan realized she did not even have the young man's name. "May I know your name? It would be a shame if I left here without knowing the name of the one responsible for such delicious pies!"

"Oh, it's Ned," he said, wiping his hand off on his apron and offering it to her. "Just Ned. I'm a student but I work here on the weekend."

"Oh, wow, a princess?" he asked, eyes wide. "That's...a first for me. I served pie to a princess."

Figurehead Empress to be specific but that was long ago and she had given up her title.

"I'm sure there are other princesses here than you realize," she said with a laugh, "but if it pleases you, you make call yourself Imperial Piemaker."

"I called myself Captain Coconut Pie once," he admitted with a laugh. "Your title's much better. And mature."

"But Captain Coconut Pie sounds more fun," she said and added, "if you were to start your own shop I will not hesitate to make that title official."

Yes, Irulan really, really liked the pie! Her apple pie is almost finished and the pecan was completely decimated.

It's grey and overcast today. Perfect day to spend inside, relaxing.
