Amber slurped on a Squishy behind the counter, unaware that it was turning her lips and the inside of her mouth blue. She probably wouldn't care anyway.

Jack smiled at the girl behind the counter. Her mouth was blue. That was interesting. "Excuse me, what would I need to do to get a cell phone?"

"Hi there," she said, grinning. "Well now, that would depend on what kind of cell phone you were looking for. What's your price range?" Raising her brows at him, she took another sip of her Squishy before setting the cup aside.

Jack rubbed his hand across his lips, wondering if she'd get the message.

"This is the part where I admit I'm from a hundred years ago and don't really understand modern pricing yet," he said freely. "I always seem to have enough money, but I don't know whether a fair amount for a cell phone is one dollar or one thousand."

She watched that little gesture of his and took it for him being thinky. Guys. Always one gesture or another, meaning something.

"Ah, gotcha." She bounced down and around from behind the counter, and said, "Follow me and I'll give you the run down. I'm Amber by the way," she added, grinning over her shoulder at him.

Maybe she dyed her lips blue on purpose. Jack didn't judge modern fashion, and he obediently followed along.

"Jack," Jack answered, "... surname Priest, since there seems to be surplus of us. I've been here about a month and the reserve meeting finally convinced me to get a phone of my own."

Amber stepped behind the phone case, and licked her lips. They weren't sticky, just cold.

"You've lost me a bit there, Jack Priest," she said, liking the sound of his name. "Why do you need a phone on the reserve?" She didn't have a clue what the meetings were about. She had a one track mind lately and it was all about 'woe, I'm leaving'.

"The support reserves," Jack explained. "For the people who aren't fighters or wizards but want to help in an emergency. It was all girls except me, and they were all exchanging phone numbers."

He ... wasn't really thrilled about being the only guy in the group. He was already short, slight, and pretty. But it was the closest group to what he could actually do.

"Ah, yah, okay," she said, light going on. But awww, how cute. The only guy amongst a bunch of girls. "I bet they love that, uh?" she teased. "Okay, then just your basic phone or..." she pointed at a couple "...there's the internet, maps, apps, video, GPS." Wait. One hundred years ago. "GPS global positioning system. It can direct you where you want to go, tell you where to go if you're lost, directions and all that good stuff. All that technology might be a bit much, yah?"

"But I'm going to be here a year," Jack said. "Even if I don't know how to use it now, I might grow into it. How hard is it to use?"

He wanted the geepeess.

"Not that hard actually once you get the hang of it," she said. "This one here is called a BlackBerry Curve." She pointed to it. "Go ahead, pick it up. It's pretty awesome actually. Just have to be careful for butt-dialing." She thought that was funny. "But it does just about everything you want in a phone. There's also the BlackBerry Pearl Flip. No butt-dialing. It's pretty cool too." Amber didn't have one, but she played around with them enough to know. "Care for me to walk you through the specifications?"

"Whatever you think I need to know," Jack said amiably. "I like the Curve. The screen is bigger." A pause. "That's good, isn't it?"

"It is yes. Big screens are great. For everything, really. But okay..." she leaned forward, over the phone and rattled on for a good ten - fifteen minutes, at least. Covering everything she could think of about the phone while flipping through the owners manual, using the phone to show him its various capabilities. "I know it might all seem confusing at first, but in the long run, you'll appreciate it."

Jack was left blinking by the onslaught of information, and he knew he'd only retain half of it, if that. "I'll take the Curve," he said briskly, and carefully reached out to poke at it. "You must be good at your job, Amber, if you can keep all of that in your head."

She grinned. "Thanks, Jack. But I've been working here almost two years now so I've played with the phones a time or two. That and reading the manual helps. New phones come in, I'm hanging around this counter making a wish list." She told him the price then asked: "Red, silver, black, or pink?"

"Silver," he said. The money was more than he thought it would be, but he had that much, and he pulled out a checkbook. "So what's on your wish list these days?"

"Well, I'm leaving soon so I would have to say Liir in my back pocket when I leave," she replied. "But since that's not likely to happen, I'll take a new car and a home away from home." Bending, she retrieved his phone from the locked case below and proceeded to set it up for him. "I know it's pricey, yah? But anything at all goes wrong with it, you bring it right back here and T and C will make good on the purchase. Turtle is awesome like that."

"I like her," Jack said, taking the phone and poking at it a little. "And I'm sorry I can't help you with the car or the home. Thank you."
