Caritas - Wednesday; 6/10

Penelope was behind the bar as was her wont every Wednesday evening. She grabbed a bowl of peanuts and nibbled while lazily watching the band. They always seemed to keep her a notch above total boredom, aside from dealing with customers that is.

Caritas is open.

Hurley came in and sat at the bar, a smile on his face.

"Hey, Penelope," he greeted.

"Hello, Hurley," she replied, a touch shy. "How are you?" She set a Coke in front of him, on a napkin.

"I'm good," he said. "How are you? Been, like, good and stuff?"

"I have, thank you," she said. "Have you been well?"

"Been totally good," Hurley said. "I kinda had a good weekend."

"I did too," she admitted. "I'm pleased that I didn't do anything that I regret."

Hurley nodded. "We just did... yeah, something... special." He blushed a bit.

She was blushing too, and added a small giggle. "Yes, we did." She looked up at him. "I'm thankful, Hurley, that you didn't ... take advantage sounds so wrong to say, but considering what was going around, I just thank you for not playing on those crazy hormones."

"It was hard," Hurley admitted. "But I didn't want to, you know, hurt you or anything."

"Hurt me?" she asked, curious as to what he meant.

"Make you go beyond what... you'd normally be okay with," Hurley said.

She blinked at him.

"You care about me and I trust you, Hurley."

Hurley nodded. "I trust you too, Penelope."

"I'm glad to hear it. I would never take advantage of you," she told him. "Even if I did want... well, no need to mention other things. It was crazy. Good, I think. For us. But..."

Wow, she could just be quiet now.

"...Can I get some rum in this coke?" Hurley said with a little embarrassed laugh.

"Yes," she said quickly, face burning. And she poured a good measure of rum in his Coke.

"That was a bit forward, wasn't it?"

"I don't mind," Hurley said, sipping at his drink.

She was terrible. "Then why the rum?" she asked, teasing.

"They call it liquid courage for a reason," Hurley joked.

"Do they? I didn't know that," she replied, amused. "Do you need courage, Hurley?"

"I'm just making sure," Hurley said. "You know, just keeping myself ready."

"You are a smart man," she said, grinning. "Perhaps I should have some of that liquid courage."

"Do you need to be brave about something?" Hurley asked.

"Just keeping myself ready," she said, giggling a bit as she repeated his words back at him.

Hurley blushed a bit more. He felt warm, and it wasn't just the alcohol. "You really are getting good use out of that class," he said.

"Today was date day," she told him. "But I didn't much participate. A romantic movie was playing."

"Date day?" Hurley said. "So you had to... pretend to date someone?"

That made his stomach a little funny.

"Yes. It was a surprise date," she explained. "I... didn't really participate. I just watched the movie."

She wondered at his expression. "Hurley? Are you okay?"

"Oh, it's okay," Hurley said. "Who was the, uhhh, lucky guy?"

"Like I said, I didn't much participate," she replied, grinning a little. "I just watched the movie and kept to myself."

Hurley couldn't help but smile a bit. "Cool," he said.

Tim felt the need to be sociable tonight, so he stopped by Caritas for a drink and maybe some company.

"Hi." he greeted the girl behind the bar. He wondered about her nose, but didn't say anything about it.

"Good evening," she replied politely. "What may I get you?"

"Chocolate mudslide?"

Oh, that was a first for her. She looked over at Tino and he started on the drink right away.

"I'm Penelope, by the way. I've not seen you before I don't think."

"Nice to meet you Penelope, I'm Tim. I've been in here once or twice this summer. I used to come here a lot a few years ago."

"It's a pleasure, Tim," she replied, just as Tino set his drink in front of him. "Have you come in on Wednesdays? I'm sorry if I missed greeting you."

"I don't think I have. I know I haven't met you before. Are you a student here?"

"I am, yes," she said. "I'm an upcoming senior and have been here since the beginning of my junior year. You are a student too?"

"I was, a few years ago. But this summer I'm running the storytelling workshop."

"Ah, okay," she said. He just looked pretty young. "Are you staying after the summer?"

"No I've gotta get back to school myself. But hopefully I'll be able to keep in touch better this time."

"Hey! Want to match me?" he asked. "Beer for beer again?" This time, maybe he wouldn't hit on the barkeep. Well, as much.
