Cafe Fina, Sunday

Today was 'curl up in a ball and whimper day' for Zack, who had woken up cramped in that booth at the radio station with scribbles on his face, mud in his hair, and his first hangover ever. There wasn't a status modifier item invented yet that could change exactly how fiercely he was loathe to face the day.

And then he'd shown up for work. At Cafe Fina. Where they were cooking. Food.

Okay, today was 'curl up in a ball and whimper while trying not to vomit and poutily tolerating the napkins as they cleaned him up' day.

He was lucky he had such understanding coworkers, really. They were here, instead of taking part over at that music convention that they'd probably feel right at home at.

Who is decidedly less chipper today than... Well... Ever. But he'll do his best to be pleasant if you have any concerns or requests today, honest.

Fiona came through the door of the restaurant (a sentence that would not have happened otherwise) with a young man in tow. He looked a little like her, though he happened to be a bit shorter than her, wore glasses, and seemed to look a little owl-eyed.

Fiona was speaking as she walked in. "-from the radio he works here today. I just hope that--"

"That what?"

"One second. Zack? Zack, are you in here?"

"Yuuh?"

Zack was totally there. He was that lump with his head on the table, seated at the fourth booth on the opposite wall.

Okay, he was that lump with one hand waving in the air, with his head on the table, seated at the fourth booth on the opposite wall. And he was totally outgoing. Honest.

Eliot was dragged along as Fiona rushed over to look at Zack.

"...oh. Um. Do you need anything? Maybe some water?"

"Water, prob'ly," Zack decided, sitting up and offering her a wry kind of smile. His face was a slightly pinker shade than usual. The napkins had been scrubbing all morning to get that ink off of it.

Little pink creatures were mean.

"But it's okay, you don't have to. The dishes have been bringing that all morning. And coffee. I'm fine, really."

That was the smile of a boy who was hell-bent on looking far more 'fine' than he actually was.

"You brought a friend?"

Fiona squared her shoulders and rolled her eyes. Boys.

"I'll get you water. This," she said, tugging the boy up a little closer, "is my twin brother, Eliot. He's visiting for the weekend. I wanted you to meet him. Eliot, make sure he's all right."

It was an order as she slipped away.

Eliot gave Zack a wry smile.

"Hi. You're, uh, friends with Fiona?"

"Oh, uh, yeah." Zack was smiling a little more genuinely, no matter what his level of discomfort was today. He was meeting people. He was morally obligated to be happy dammit. "Good to meet you, Eliot. I'm sorry I'm not really on the top of my game yesterday. I was abducted by... Um. Squirrels."

Oh, yes, because that sounded completely normal.

"How are you liking Fandom so far?"

He gave a shy smile; his smiles were a little easier to get than his sister's.

"It's nice. The people are all nice, the school is... a lot different from the one I'm going to, and the convention is going well."

He almost commented on the squirrels, but considering his own experience (and what he could do with rats if given half a need) he left it alone. Well, mostly.

"Sorry about your, uh, abduction. So, uh, you're the one she went clothes shopping with? Or the one that's training her with swords. Sometimes text messages are a little vague."

[enjoy fooding!]

"Clothes shopping," Zack clarified, still somehow smiling faintly. His smiles might have been easier to get than his sister's, but that just meant that Fiona's were that much more valuable when Zack got to see them.

Not that Zack didn't appreciate a good smile regardless, of course.

"I'm a bit of a lost cause when it comes to coordinating a wardrobe, unfortunately."

"You look all right to me. And you should have seen some of the crazy stuff we used to have to wear. Cee's really great, but she can't really make nice clothes."

Or clothes that fit. Or clothes that wouldn't blind Edna Mode.

Ah, but Edna was a woman of refined tastes!

"Fiona helped me pick out this stuff," Zack pointed out. "And otherwise, I'm just wearing my uniform from back home. Army boots and armor, that sort of thing. I don't usually wear the helmet."

It was a ridiculous helmet. It didn't have any eyeholes!

"Fiona?" he asked in surprise.

But then his eyes went a little wide and his hand went back towards his pack.

"....you're a soldier?"
