Ned knew there was a dance going on tonight and, while the urge to take the day off to get ready was strong, he didn't want to leave people without a place to eat beforehand. He knew the staff could handle it but, sue him, he liked coming in and cooking. He just made sure to not make anything that would make him smell like grease even after a shower.

"Hello, good morning," Ned said, peering up from one of the menus and then tossing it aside. "I didn't think anyone but myself was up this early."

Irulan laughed. "Yes, well, a habit of a lifetime, I suppose." She peered at the kitchen, "Am I too early for pie?"

"There's no such thing," Ned said and grinned. "What kind would you like?"

"I think I would like to try the Pina Colada Pie," she pointed at the Specials.

"I can do that," he said, nodding and reaching for the pie pan. "It's a new recipe for me so I hope it turned out all right. A little sweet treat before the dance tonight."

"I'm sure it turned out perfect," Irulan said, then added. "I'm looking forward to the event tonight. It shall be the first one I'll be attending since returning to the island."

Ned carefully cut a piece of the pie, settled it on a plate and then put it in front of her Irulan, complete with fork and napkin. "Dances here are always fun and I'm not even really good in big crowds. Are you going to dance?"

"I shall, I even bought a dress to wear for the occasion," Irulan answered. She took the fork and tasted the pie. It was just as Irulan suspected. She smiled at Ned. "It is as I said, perfect."

"Thanks," he said and hid a blush by ducking his head. "It's good to know that I can follow instructions. I didn't buy a new suit but I figured my old one would do. It's clean."

He hoped. He hadn't baked in it or anything.

"I'm sure it'll be sufficient," Irulan assured. "Will you be going with anyone to the dance?"

Now she was just being nosy but since none of her stepchildren were there Ned was the unfortunate victim target of her curiosity.

"I think so," Ned said, nodding. "I mean, I always go to them even if I don't actually dance. Two left feet."

"I don't ever recall dancing in the school events either," she said with a small laugh. "Although, I do recall that I became inebriated."

"That still happens," he laughed. "I've managed to avoid it but some friends of mine haven't been so lucky."

"Did your friends end up bouncing aloud or talking really loudly?" Irulan asked. Not that happened to her or anything.

"Bouncing and talking loud, yeah," Ned said, laughing. "Kaylee does that a lot. But she does that when she's not drunk too."

"Kaylee?" Irulan repeated, "I used to know a Kaylee... I think she was my big sister in Fandom. Although, I don't suppose they're the same person."

"I...don't think so," Ned said after a minute of thought. "I think there was another version of her here before this version."

His mind reeled at just having to explain that.

"There's another version of before this--" she stopped then sighed. "Fandom strangeness. I don't think I shall ever be used to it."

"You and me both," he said and rubbed his forehead. "It's hard to understand sometimes. I just...try not to think too hard."

"And if I'm to understand the invitation, there would be some alumni returning to the island. That would certainly add more confusion, I think."

"Yeah, I think everyone's invited," Ned said, nodding. "Big giant island party. I hope there's enough alcohol."

"I have faith the island would somehow provide," she replied. Irulan looked down at the pie, she was nearly finished with it. "Speaking of drinks, may I request a beverage please."

"Of course," Ned said, nodding. "Anything specific? Milk? Water? Soda? Juice? Milkshake?"

Ned got to work making that milkshake and, quickly enough, he was setting it in front of her with a straw.
