Turtle & Canary; Monday [ 07/06 ].

After a total fail weekend trip home for the Fourth of July holiday, to celebrate in true Westingtown extravagance, Turtle was extremely glad that she didn't have any Monday workshops so that she could concentrate on catching up with everything at work. A new semester starting over a holiday weekend meant she had to push all the things she normally pushed late, but hopefully not too late. If anything, though, she'd asked Kyle to come in about a job today, so there was always that. New employees were always good news (especially cute, albeit weird, ones, not that Turtle was actually thinking that, of course, really!).

And, of course, there was signage:

Welcome to Turtle & Canary!

When you made a hurried escape with only a duffel bag and then spent a week planet-hopping, you were bound to lose a few items along the way. Now that Hoshi had gotten settled in her cabin, she had a long list of things she needed.

"Hi Turtle! How's your summer going so far?"

"Two months of Starfleet training were very eventful, especially at the end," said Hoshi. "But I'm starting to think that I should be exploring other options for my future. Maybe I should just go to normal university like everyone else."

After all, she wasn't sure if Starfleet would take her back after the trouble she'd managed to get into.

"A lot of different rules and stuff that I thought were a little over the top," said Hoshi. "I kept getting yelled at by all the high-ranking officers for stupid things. But the final straw was getting into a shoving match with my commanding officer over a poker game."

"He wasn't actually part of the game. He was trying to break it up and I was trying to explain that gambling was okay as long as we were off-duty," said Hoshi. "I didn't really win the argument."

"Well, there was betting involved, since it was a poker game, but we weren't playing for anything valuable. This was in the 22nd century when they weren't using money anymore," Hoshi pointed out.

"Honestly, I think the commander was just upset that no one invited him to join the game. Either way, he won't be playing anytime soon. His arm somehow got broken in the whole scuffle," she added, carefully omitting the fact that she broke the commander's arm.

"I didn't mean too!" said Hoshi, cringing. "They had us doing all these conditioning drills, and I've been practicing my aikido moves. One moment he was shoving me, and my first reaction was to fight back!"

The first sign that Kyle had arrived was a face pressed up against the nearest available window to look in. Some days, he did not have his stealth mode on. When he saw that this was the right place, he made for the door to come inside.

"I asked the guy at the place with all the bread and cakes to make sure." He was looking much more presentable today, with new clothes and shoes that actually fit him and it even looked like he'd had a shower. "Does everywhere have stores that are only for bread and cakes or is it just here?"

Kyle shook his head. "LA originally. 2018." He'd figured out that that was an important distinction.

"I think my timeline's a little different. There was a nuclear war in 2004 started by machines that wiped out most of the world. Some of us are still left, but there aren't any bakeries."

"Lots of them," he replied. "Plenty of rats to go around." He so didn't need to word it like that. "Couple of others kinds of animals that scavenge."
