Turtle & Canary -- Thursday

It was one of those days where you just woke up and had the urge to dance. Maron had work though, so she entertained herself by making every movement as graceful as possible as she did her job. It wasn’t until a little while later that she realized that she was singing as she did so:

”Dancing things, painted wings
Things I almost remember,
And a song someone sings
Once upon a December.

Someone holds me safe and warm.
Horses prance through a silver storm.
Figures dancing gracefully
Across my memory...

Someone holds me safe and warm.
Horses prance through a silver storm.
Figures dancing gracefully
Across my memory...

Far away, long ago,
Glowing dim as an ember,
Things my heart
Used to know,
Things it yearns to remember...

And a song
Someone sings
Once upon a December...”

Maron clapped her hands over her mouth, blinking in surprise, before turning to Apu. “What was that?”

Some time later, after talking to Turtle, Maron added a sale sign to the window:

On Sale Today!
50% off all throat lozenges and earplugs!

Turtle was already in town getting her new haircut (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/4162652.html), so she figured she might as well see how Maron was doing at the store, especially since she didn't see her roommate often during cabin times.

When she came into the store, she paused, stopped, waited for music start and, when it didn't, breathed a sigh of relief, hand to her heart, and went on with a nice normal greeting, "Hey, Maron!"

Turtle gave a faint, slightly self-conscious smile as she brought her hands up to the new darkened bob. "Yeah?" she asked. "It was kind of....it's been a weird morning, but I feel like my head is so much clearer now. You really like it?"

"I've been thinking about it a little," Turtle admitted with a little bit of a shrug. "And today, I just..."

Sang to myself in the mirror and went for it.

"...went for it."

But then it started again, because now Turtle started singing again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQQax5AofV8):

"Why don't we turn the clock to zero, honey
I'll sell the stock, we'll spend all the money
We're starting up a brand new day
Turn the clock all the way back
I wonder if she'll take me back
I'm thinking in a brand new way

Turn the clock to zero, sister
You'll never know how much I missed her
I'm starting up a brand new day
Turn the clock to zero, boss
The river's wide, we'll swim across
We're starting up a brand new day

It could happen to you,
Just like it happened to me,
There's simply no immunity
There's no guarantee.
I say love's such a force if you find yourself in it
You need some time for reflection
You say, baby wait a minute, wait a minute
Wait a minute, wait a minute
Wait a min--
"

She cut herself holding up her hands with a deep breath. "WAIT A MINUTE. Stop."

Pause.

"Okay. There."

Turtle sighed, shoulders sagging. "Totally not just you," she assured Maron. "This sort of thing has happened before. Which reminds me, I want to grab some throat lozenges before I leave; I'll need tomorrow morning."

"Definitely a special sale on them," Turtle confirmed with a nod. "And throw a discount on earplugs, too. And, well, mostly harmless. It depends on what's being sung and who's singing it, really."

"Bad lyrics," Turtle said with a nod. "Dirty lyrics, mean lyrics, lyrics that say something to someone that you don't necessarily want to..."

"Oh, you know..." Turtle closed her eyes as music started again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1VlRqeTkE0), but it was too late now.

"Time after time!"

"If you're lost you can look--and you will find me
time after time
if you fall I will catch you--I'll be waiting
time after time!
"

"Urg."

"It's not even nighttime, Island!" Turtle shouted incredulously upwards. "Come on!"

She sighed again, shaking her head as she looked at Maron. "So, yeah, welcome to break out into random song day. I should have expected this since I think it's been a while."

"Not everything," Turtle said, "thankfully. Just a lot of the really embarrassing stuff."

Nodding a little, Turtle sighed, opened her mouth to say one thing, but out came another song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjBDwqu-lVQ):

"These latter days are growing strange
Crazy ways and constant change
And the lines are drawn that we must cross
Across the board we share the loss
And when you feel the door is open
And it's pullin' you in, yeah, yeah, yeah

Misery loves company
Won't you share what's inside of me
Misery loves company
Won't you share my misery?
"

Oh, God, oh, God. Turtle couldn't stop it, it was just coming out, and appropriately bubbly, too:

"Hold on to what you try to be
Your individuality
When the world is on your shoulders
Just smile and let it go
If people try to put you down
Just walk on by don't turn around
You only have to answer to yourself
!"

Oh, God, Turtle started bopping around a little. Maybe she could blame it on the new hair cut. It felt cool all bouncy and stuff.

"Dream of falling in love
Anything you've been thinking of
When the world seems to get too tough
Bring it all back to you.

Na na nanananana
Na na nananana.
Na na nanananana.

Bring back! Bring back, na na na!
"

And, suddenly, there were beach balls bouncing around, loosed from a display not too far away, and Turtle couldn't refuse picking one up and tossing it around any more than she could refuse singing out with a little shimmy.

"Don't stop, never give up
Hold your head high and reach the top
Let the world see what you have got
Bring it all back to you
Dream of falling in love
Anything you've been thinking of
When the world seems to get too tough
Bring it all back to you!
"

OHGODMAKEITSTOP!

Turtle's mouth opened to continue with a little bit more, but instead of singing, she forced herself to take in a deep breath instead of letting any words out. And then she very pointedly closed her mouth and kept it closed, with a stomp of her foot as if stomping the music to a stop.

Turtle tried to keep stern and professional about the whole thing herself, but, really, with Maron giggling like that and all the beach balls around them, and even just the feel of the song, she was chuckling, too.

"Okay," she said, "and, overall, I mean, as far as weird things go, you could do a lot worse."

Re: Talk to Maron

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2009-07-16 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle inspected the balls at their feet, before giving on a light punt. She winced slightly as it bounced off the head of the SquishyBot, but she was grinning. "I think there's a good chance the song had something to do with it, yeah. And it could be worse. At least it was beach balls that fell and not something like bottles of sunscreen or something that'd make a real mess."

"A mess like that," Turtle grinned, "you put Apu on the job."

"I gotta pay him to do something, right?"

Re: Talk to Maron

"Exactly!" Turtle agreed. "And, besides, they're just beach balls. Super easy to clean."

...darn it, now you've earwormed me. I love that song so much, I put the Spanish version on my playlist for Anemone.

*wanders off humming*

Spanish version? *looks hopeful* Could you possibly please tell me who it's by, etc. so I can try to track it down?

Re: OOC

It's from the Spanish dub of the movie... I think I downloaded it off Mininova. *pokes file info* I think the singer is 'Thalia,' and they translated the title as 'Una Vez En Diciembre'.

Let me know if you don't find it, and I'll upload it for you when I get home on Sunday.

Thanks! That will help me track it down a lot faster :)

DON'T EARWORM ME IN CLASS. IT IS MEAN.

*points up* Pretty sure I got it on Mininova, but let me know if you don't find it.
