Turtle & Canary; Monday [ 07/20 ].

Turtle spent the first handful of minutes of coming into the store today talking with Apu about her hair, which she really could only do for a handful of minutes because it was just really, really weird otherwise. Once she finally managed to break out of the conversation, she settled behind the counter with some files to go over weekend reports and start doing the order for the week.

She had out in the window a sign: "NOW HIRING! Tuesday and Wednesday shifts avaiable! Great benefits, discounts, and Free Squishies! Inquire within!"

Today's Squishy Flavors: Apricot, Red, Grape Judas

Today was... definitely a Monday! Which was possibly the sole reason for Zack swinging by Turtle & Canary today after classes. The Monday-ness of it all meant that he was loathe to make his way back to his little corner of the world to succumb to the siren call of the Monday blues.

"Hey, Turtle! Is the apricot Squishy any good today?"

"Zack." Turtle met him with a firm look before her hand went sincerely to her heart. "Do I look like the kind of girl who would serve not-good Apricot Squishies in her store?"

Zack had himself a laugh at that.

"My apologies! You look like the kind of girl who sells only the best Apricot Squishies in her store. A woman who seeks out quality! And-- Ooh. Is that a new haircut?"

Zack was a wee bit slow sometimes, yes.

"It is," Turtle said, beaming, maybe even blushing a little, as her hand almost habitually went up to pat the edges of it. And she asked, with a little bit of tentativeness, "What do you think?"

Zack was, by no means, the world's expert on good haircuts. He came from a world where if your hair happened to defy all laws of physics and gravity, then you were totally cool.

But Turtle's new hairstyle really did happen to look good, so even if he had horrible fashion sense if any at all, at least he wasn't going to be terribly misleading.

"Very nice," he decided, nodding and tilting his head a little as he inspected her hair. "It looks mature, you know? It suits you!"

"And that's exactly what I was going for," Turtle said proudly. "I mean, I'm almost a senior and I own my own business and I'm an associate lawyer, not to mention hopefully a future Student Council President, so a mature look would really fit the bill, you know?"

"It's one heck of a resume," Zack noted, grinning. "If I was the same year as you, you'd totally have my vote. I mean, not just because of the hair, but that totally helps."

It did! It was very vote-worthy hair!

He kinda wanted to pet it. Haaaaair.

Turtle wrinkled her nose a little. "It really is too bad you're not in my class," she said. "Every vote counts, you know? But, hey, if you've got any friends who are..."

"I'll pass on the word! Turtle for student council!" Zack shot off a wee salute. "Because how many other candidates will actually go gather clothing when Fandom leaves you in embarrassing states of undress?"

Which he so, so owed her for, at that.

Turtle smiled at that, and not only because it was complimentary. There was at least a part of her brain that was recalling up why Zack needed the clothes in the first place.

"I'm sure others would," Turtle offered congenially, "but I'll admit that I never mind going that extra mile."

"Which brings me right along to the part where I ask how much I owe you for those clothes," Zack laughed. "I would have been here sooner, but it's been a busy week, with reserves and rehearsals, and then Fandom decided it would be a great idea to turn me into a puppy for a few days."

In all fairness, he'd been a bloody adorable puppy. And he'd been completely nude when he'd changed back. It was kind of like a weekend trend for him, now.

And Turtle even had to take a moment to note that Zack probably would have made a freakin' adorable puppy, too, before she blinked and went into her protest. "Oh, Zack, no, you don't owe me anything for it! It was a crisis situation, and to hold you to owing me something for it would be extortion."

And she was a kind, fair Capitalist queen.

"Well, I did promise to pay you," Zack noted, crossing his arms and pacing a little. "And a member of SOLDIER keeps his promises. It goes hand-in-hand with honor and dreams, you know?"

He then perked up, lifting a finger and grinning impishly.

"I know! How about one date?"

Turtle had been all set to make one more light protest, which meant that it took her a second to really register what Zack had said, and then she wasn't even sure she heard it right. So she figured she'd better just check.

"Wait. What?"

"A date," Zack repeated, smiling and shrugging. "I mean, not if you don't want to. But I figure, if you don't want me giving you money or anything, why not do dinner, instead?"

This offering-a-date-as-payment thing would someday be a Zack trademark. He was sneaky that way, yes.

"Well, no, it's just..." Eyes a little wide, Turtle faltered, a sudden well of unexpected flustering bubbling up and making the argument she was trying to make obsolete before it even came out. "I mean..." Really, she saw the whole clothes things as just doing Zack a favor and helping him out, and he really didn't have to....but there was nothing wrong with returning a favor with another favor, right? "Err..." And she had sworn off dating, but that was months ago, and it made her miserable and cranky, and this was the dawning of a new Turtle for the final year, one that wasn't going to let anything hold her back. And it was just a date; it would be fun. She needed fun.

"...Okay. I mean, sure, why not, right? And you're probably going to insist on paying me back one way or the other, right?"

"Right," Zack laughed. "It's either this, or I slip money into your till when you're not looking, and I don't know what the clothing came to, so you'll probably be here for hours after close, trying to get everything to balance. And you wouldn't want that, right?"

Sneaky! Sneaky like a sneaky thing!

So sneaky. He was a total Sneaky McSneakysneak.

Which meant Turtle just sort of looked at Zack for a moment before shaking her head, albeit in slight amusement, because it was the kind of sneaky she thought she could appreciate. And reminded herself of the new hair and the new Turtle and why the heck not?

"You're right; I wouldn't. I mean, dinner or a movie or some other date thing easily beats an off drawer any day."

"That's right!" Zack grinned. He hadn't in a million years actually expected the date thing to work. This was kind of awesome, actually. "So, is that what you'd like to do, then? A dinner and movie? Or was there anything else that you'd prefer?"

"I...think dinner and a movie would be great," Turtle said, slowly, so that it didn't come out sounding as eager in actuality as it did in her head. "I mean, that's the standard date thing, isn't it?"

"It is," Zack agreed, not bothering to make any effort to sound less eager than he actually was. He was Zack. He exuded eagerness. There'd be something wrong if he didn't, really. "A dinner and a movie it is, then! How's Thursday?"

Random day of the week off the top of his head for the win!

"Thursdays are..." Turtle drew in a hesitant breath, "~~the mun's typical little-to-no computer day~~ ~~subject to extreme SP into Friday~~ iffy, but I could do it..."

"Oh, no, that's not a problem!" Zack considered for a moment more. "How about Saturday, then? If you're still working Saturdays, I can pick you up from here after your shift, even!"

The term 'pick you up' was weird and wonderful and Zack was kind of delighting in the ability to actually say it in regards to a date. A date! Date with Turtle!

How cool was that?

"Kyle's working Saturday's now," Turtle reported, quickly and brightly, but hopefully not too quickly or brightly, although her smile was definitely big for how serendipitous that was. Kyle had Saturdays, and it wasn't Friday so Valentine wouldn't make fun of her about it for everyone to hear on the radio. Perfect, really. "So that's....perfect, really."

"Perfect!"

Oh, serendipity! What a lovely thing it was!

And her quick, bright reply really only served to have Zack's only replies be that much more chipper, in turn. He kind of fed on that kind of energy. Like an empathic sponge of sunshine and puppies and sparkly things, or something.

It wasn't a superpower or anything. That was just how Zack rolled.

"So, Saturday, then! You pick the movie and the restaurant, and we'll go from there!"

"Should I let you know where?" Turtle asked with a grin. "Or do you want to just leave it up for a surprise and trust my consumer knowledge of this island?"

Because if someone didn't trust that...seriously, who could they?

"Surprise me," Zack laughed. "I don't know the first thing about dining on this world, anyhow."

Wutaian was about the same as Chinese, and that was where the similarities began and ended, so far as Zack was aware.

Turtle nodded, with a grin, and didn't believe that for a second, because didn't Zack work at Cafe Fina? So if that was true...well, no eating at Cafe Fina when Zack was on duty...

"I'll have to make sure I choose well, then."

Zack's entire position at Fina seemed to begin and end with 'schmooze with the customers' and 'babysit the dishes,' so there was little danger in actually eating at the cafe on Sundays, honest!

"I trust your better judgement and await your decision with bated breath," Zack laughed, shooting off a playful sort of salute before returning his hands to his hips. "In the meantime, I guess I'm going to have to make do with one of those awesome Apricot Squishys, huh?"

Turtle glanced over and gave Bob the nod to go ahead and make the Squishy up for Zack. "A Squishy," she pronounced, "always does the trick to fill in the meantime."

*is eying her Monday* It'll either be really crazy, or very good, and I hate when I can't tell which.
