Caritas - Wednesday

Penelope was behind the counter, setting up little bright umbrellas in various drinks that she tried to make. Recipes off the top of her head. She just needed a taste tester and it was just like Tino to refuse. She would just have to weedle them on the first customer that seemed willing to try something new.

Caritas is open.

Hurley, weird dreams and daydreams aside, couldn't miss seeing Penelope for at Caritas two weeks in a row.

"Hey Penelope," he said, sitting down at the bar.

"Hello, Hurley," Penelope replied, smiling at him. "I haven't seen you for a while. How have you been?"

"I keep dozing off today, it's weird," Hurley said. "But yeah, I kept getting caught up in stuff last week. Sorry I didn't come see you at work."

"Are you not sleeping well at night?" she asked, concerned. "It's okay. I didn't work last week."

"Oh, just... weird dreams," Hurley said. And he reeeeeally wasn't gonna tell Penelope any details about that.

"Oh," she nodded. "I've had weird dreams sometimes so I understand that. Would you like something to drink?"

"Sure!" Hurley said. "Whatever you feel like making."

Penelope grinned a little and set before him three glasses. "Pick one." Each drink was made up of different liqours that she just combined together to see what they tasted like. She just hadn't tried any herself. She was going to leave the taste testing up to her patrons.

Hurley took the middle one and sipped.

"...Huh," he said.

She blinked in anticipation.

"...not good? Here. Try this one." She scooted the one on her right towards him.

Really if she'd tried any of them, she never would try to pass them off on anyone. They kind of sucked.

Hurley tried the next one and pulled a face.

"What was in that?"

She twisted her lips and pondered that face and then the glass. "Um. I'm not sure." It was kind of funny though. "Okay. A Coke? It's on the house for trying my icky drinks."

"Hey, anything for you," Hurley said. "A coke would be awesome, thanks."

Penelope saw to his Coke right away, not able to keep her grin to herself. So her drink making didn't turn out so well. It's not as though she was going to work in a bar the rest of her life.

"So other than not sleeping too well, how's everything else going for you?"

"Pretty good, I guess," Hurley said. "I mean, nothing bad's going on, so... good stuff."

"That's nice to hear," she said as she dumped the contents of those three glasses. "Nothing bad is always good."

"How about you?" Hurley said. "You're looking good, and stuff."

She smiled. "Thank you, Hurley. I doing well enough, I suppose. I was, um, not myself all of last week."

"The, uhhh, animal thing?" Hurley said.

"Uh-huh," she nodded. "I'll never understand it but Joan took good care of me."

"Yeah, Joan is pretty awesome," Hurley said. "The island has a pretty dumb sense of humor sometimes, I guess."

"Yes," she said, having to grin just a little. "I get rid of the nose only to have the entire pig take over."

"You were cute, though," Hurley said.

"Says youuuu," she sing-songed on a light giggle. "I pranced around and snorted a lot."

"No chance of seeing that now, huh?" Hurley joked.

"Oh, hah hah, Hurley," she smirked, reaching out to poke him gently. "Not now, not tomorrow, and hopefully not in any near future."

"Shucks," Hurley said.

"What? You'd like that just so you can laugh at me," she said, grinning.

"Not laugh," Hurley said, sipping his Coke. "Promise."

Penelope leaned forward on her forearms. "If not laugh, then what?"

"Oh, just... take in how cute it'd be," Hurley said, smiling at her. Maybe he'd been emboldened a little by his dream... even if it hadn't been Penelope in it.

"Hm," she murmured, eyeing him. "I suppose I could deal with you thinking I'm cute. But if it never happens again, I will not be sorry for it." And thankfully he thought not to share that particular dream with her.

"Yeah, true. I kinda like you like this, better," Hurley said. "I've been lucky and not really had any animal stuff happen."

"I'm certainly glad for that because at least this me can talk to you," she said. "And just wait, because you said you're lucky, you'll be next."

"Yeah. I'll end up as, like, a hamster or something," Hurley chuckled. "Or a gerbil."

"Or maybe a... sheep." What? It was the curly hair that made her think 'sheep'.

"Ha!" Hurley said. "I'd make a weird little sheep."

"Weird? No, you'd be cute with your little baa's here and there."

"Sounds like you're shipping me off to Old MacDonald's farm," Hurley said.

Penelope laughed. "You said it."

"As long as it doesn't end in me getting sheared," Hurley said.
