Luke's Diner, August 3 (Monday)

It was funny -- Lacey had always prided herself on being a good civic-minded citizen back in Dog River, and making herself useful to the community. That involved everything from sponsoring community events to getting herself onto committees and organizational boards somehow, and no matter what she did someone always gave her grief for trying too hard.

This past weekend in Fandom, people had fallen asleep and gotten sent to an alternate dimension, and all Lacey could do to help was bring some food down to town hall. It wasn't trying to put together a community picnic, but she felt really, really good about that.

Although without Oscar Leroy grumping about it, it still felt slightly off. Oh well.

Or just fielding smartass questions about it from the staff.

After two Mondays of being a penguin, and a weekend spent fretting over comatose friends, Bobby was exceedingly glad to be doing something nice and normal like meeting up with George and Kyle at Luke's. So he was in a very cheerful mood as he slid into his seat at their usual booth.

George showed up a moment later and slid into the seat opposite that gave a good view of the whole restaurant.

"Bobby! I'm altogether please yer no longer a wee bird," he teased, grinning.

"I'm altogether pleased too," Bobby had to say. "I mean, it was fun sometimes but I really missed having thumbs."

"Y'did seem t'be doin' full well wit' that beak," he couldn't help teasing. "An' th' peckin' an' beakin'."

So didn't happen, no.

"...Pecking?" Bobby yelped. "I pecked people? Did I peck you? If I did, I'm so totally sorry, dude."

And that was George cracking up at the reaction.

"Whaaaaat?"

"Am I late?" Kyle asked, sliding into the booth seat.

"I'm not sure," Bobby said with a shrug. "But given that I was a penguin last two times we were supposed to hang out, I think you can be forgiven even if you are."

"I was jus' sharin' wit' Bobby here about his penguin peckin' tendencies," George said.

He was lyyyyying.

"The bird thing? That was a sharp beak," Kyle agreed without actually agreeing.

"I didn't peck people! I would've remembered pecking people!" Bobby protested.

"D'you remember what you've been up to in that creature?" George asked curiously. "Are ye sure tis everythin'?"

"I remember some," Bobby said defensively. Cheerfully ignoring the fact that he'd not been sure about pecking people mere minutes before claiming he couldn't possibly have. "I'd totally remember pecking, if there was pecking."

"Well, you didn't peck me. Did he peck you George?"

"Aye, I don' remember any peckin'," George said innocently.

"See?" Bobby sat back against the bench, crossing his arms over his chest. "No pecking."

"You did peck at your milkshake," Kyle pointed out.

"An' at the fries," George replied.

"Yes, well, it's not like I had hands," Bobby pointed out.

"You could've gobbled?"

"I was a penguin, not a turkey!" Bobby stuck his tongue out at Kyle. "The penguin is a noble bird. It doesn't gobble."

"You smelled like fish," he pointed out.

It had to be asked.

"What's a turkey?" George asked. "But ye did smell like fish."

"...What's a turkey?" Bobby repeated. Oh, right, George was from the world without waffles or hamburgers. "It's um, a bird that people eat. Especially for Thanksgiving or Christmas but it's totally an all times of year bird too." That would clear things right up! "Penguins, on the other hand, are totally not for eating."

Who for once isn't patting herself on the back for doing community service. Probably because Oscar isn't around.

There are fresh handmade flower garlands pinned up there today, free for the taking.

Lacey felt like doing something to try and brighten people's day.

I have been watching my shiny new Middleman DVDs allllllllllllllllll day today.
