Luke's Diner, August 17 (Monday)

Nobody, if they value their sanity, should ever introduce Lacey Burrows to Facebook apps. Or, judging from the looks the busboy was getting from the rest of the diner staff because he'd gone and sent their boss a MyZoo invite, if they value their life.

The second she'd cleaned and tidied the diner to her satisfaction, turned the sign in the door to OPEN, then headed back toward the counter (today, with laptop) Lacey had her chin in her hand and a wheedling tone in her voice as she talked to the screen.

"Aw, come on, cooperate, will you? You don't really want to be an endangered species forever, right? I'm trying to help you out here . . ."

Luke's is open, and just be grateful Lacey hasn't gotten the pandas yet, or the specials might all be bamboo.

Just a little shoutout to ALL OF YOU WHO KNOW WHO YOU ARE, YOU EVIL ZOO ENABLERS.

It was Monday, so of course Bobby was there at the usual time, in the usual booth even.

He wasn't even sure why he was looking at the menu. He always ordered the same thing, after all. But maybe one day?

"Goin' t'branch out today, Bobby?" George teased as he arrived. "Brave man."

"I want onion rings," Kyle added, joining them as well.

"I'll probably just get the same as usual," Bobby admitted. "I don't even know what Chicken Adobo is," he added sheepishly.

"Somethin' wit' chicken, I'd think," George said helpfully.

My pandas won't sex again. :(

Neither would mine! And then I forgot to check my zoo for one day, and SURPRISE. HAVE SOME BABY PANDAS.

I think they like it better when they're not being watched.

"I'll get it and you guys can try it if you want," Kyle decided.

I knoooow, mine either. *pokes them*

"Go you with being the adventurous one!" Bobby said with a nod. "So how'd you guys do with the rest of the uh, being girls thing on Friday?"

Irulan entered the diner wearing one of her favored hats, it was something she seldom wore but loved, she also carried a box with her.

"Good morning!" Irulan greeted with uncharacteristic enthusiasm.

"Hi there! Can I --"

Lacey looked up from her furious internal debate over whether she really needed to buy 25 more meerkats, and naturally the hat was the first thing she saw.

". . . help you?"

Irulan beamed, "Yes, I would like some breakfast and your permission to post this poster (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj311/grimorie/tinhat.jpg) on your community board!"

The enthusiasm and the hat? It could poke an eye out.

Which was why Lacey was staying well behind the counter, yes. Possibly involving strategic use of the cash register. ~~While her player laughed herself to tears over the beauty of that poster.~~

"Well, it is the community board, so by all means." She laughed, and it was only a tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny bit awkward. Really. "Branching out into a new fashion line, huh?"

She pulled a menu out of the rack on the side of the counter and offered it to Irulan. "And breakfast. What can I get you? Foil? I mean, uh . . . French toast, maybe?"

As soon as permission was granted, Irulan posted the poster on the board:

She was back in front of Lacey in no time, grinning. "My thanks!"

A similar poster would also be on her shop as soon as she was done with breakfast. It was a glorious, glorious day and as such Irulan dismissed Lacey's awkwardness for suppressed enthusiasm. Who wouldn't want a tin foil hat? It was marvelous!

"As for breakfast, yes, I would love French toast and coffee if you please!"

Lacey wondered if she would take mail orders; she could probably make a killing off Hank.

That is, if Hank had any actual money. So never mind.

"Wow, that was . . ." Lacey waved a hand vaguely in the air while she poured coffee with the other (she had mad skillz like that), searching for the right word. It's not that hard, Lacey. "Quick. Anything with that French toast? Syrup, fruit topping, side of eggs?"

"The eggs would be a fine addition to the toast," she looked like nothing in this world could take the grin off her face. "I take selling hats seriously."

And she does. To a ridiculous degree: witness, the Poster.

Oh, there was witnessing. There was definitely witnessing. And maybe a tiny bit of fear. But still, witnessing. Lacey might just think of it as The Poster, capitals requisite, from here on out.

"Okay, French toast and eggs it is. How do you want those cooked?" She didn't need to use the order pad, but frantic scribbling gave her something to do with her hands, so Lacey set the coffee in front of Irulan and wrote the order down with an entirely undue number of needless flourishes. "You have, um, a really admirable work ethic there, I have to say."

Self-esteem with the structural integrity of a house of cards, party of one, your table is ready!

"After the Royal Council operating a hat shop is almost like a run in the park," Irulan said, mangling the phrase. "And it helps that hats are a particular passion of mine."

She moved her head and when she moved her head... her ginormous butterfly hat moved too.

"Sunny side-up for the eggs please and perhaps you could add in the fruits later on after my meal?"
