Turtle & Canary -- Thursday

Maron had been having hair difficulties this morning.

Which would be why she was a wee bit late and had a hood quite firmly pulled up over her hair. No, it wasn’t coming off, and she was totally sulking.

Ugh. Bad hair days were no fun.

Who'll talk about everything ever except for her hair.

Turtle still had a lot of Pop-Tarts left over from that morning, and realized that it was Thursday, which meant that she could kill two birds with one stone and push them on Maron and Apu at the same time. Beautiful!

"Afternoon, Maron!" she called out as she came in with the box in her arms. "How goes it?"

Maron glanced up, hood still up, and had to grin a bit at Turtle.

"Steady," she answered, leaning forward slightly. "For the store. And--okay for me. What's up with the box?"

"Pop-Tarts!" Turtle informed her brightly, sliding it on the counter. "Help yourself! I was making a bunch of them for breakfast earlier."

"And they're just as good cold," Maron laughed, as she took the box to look through and pick out what she wanted.

"Though I wouldn't say they're a healthy breakfast," she added, raising her eyebrows teasingly at Turtle.

"Maron," Turtle said, giving her roommate a smirking serious look. "You've seen some of the breakfast cereals I eat; healthy is not a concern."

Maron gave that a wide-eyed shrug and said innocently, "But healthy is a concern of everyone."

Teasing was fun, okay?

And, somewhere, in the Trooper's Station, one British detective constable was feeling an unexplainable swelling of pride.

Turtle, however, was just staring.

"Is this about the toothaches, Maron? I swear, they don't even happen as often as they used to!"

Maron gave her a bit of a Look. Just a wee one.

"They shouldn't happen at all, you know. You won't have any teeth by the time you're thirty if you don't take care."

Because thirty, clearly, was ancient.

It totally was.

"I'll be rich enough by the time I'm thirty that I could get them fixed without a problem," Turtle countered.

Actually, she was probably rich enough now...

"And if you rely on money to solve one problem," Maron replied, "you'll never use anything else."

"...what do you mean?" Turtle asked, tilting her head.

"It's too easy, right?" she said lightly, ripping open her thing of Pop-Tarts and nibbling on one. "If you always get what you want through money then what do you do if you come up against a problem that can't be solved? And why would you cause yourself future problems by not taking care now just 'cause money will fix it later?"

"...but I'm not going to solve all my future problems through money," Turtle pointed out, also picking out a Pop-Tart and nibbling on it as she spoke casually. "Just if I wind up having crap teeth. I mean, you could look at it this way, too. I'm young. We never know when we'll be dead and taking a dirt nap, right? So I might as enjoy the things I like now, in case I can't enjoy them later, you know?"

"At the very least," Maron said, flicking a crumb away from her. "Your toothbrush ought to see more use. That way you can have fun and be preventative."

"Well," Turtle added after a moment, "to be fair, I've had a few bad experiences brushing my teeth before."

Maron paused, nibbled, and swallowed.

"Oh?"

Turtle hesitated.

"It's...complicated," she offered. "If you knew my exboyfriend, though, you'd understand."

"No fair," she half-complained. "You can't just say it's complicated and then drop it! That just makes me curiouser!"

Turtle let out a short sigh. "Yeah, but....well, with Jeff, it was, like, a ton of things. If it wasn't him coming back from a week in the closet covered in chocolate, it was him turning into a rock or turning into a girl or countless other things."

Then there was a pause.

"Actually, it's really a lot of typical Fandom things. I just swear, most of them all seemed to happen when I was brushing my teeth."

...

"...maybe it's a sign to change your brand of toothbrush?" Maron suggested, valiantly trying not to laugh.

"Somehow, I doubt it's the brand," Turtle said dryly.

While already planning to grab a new one as she left today. Maron was hardly Jeff, but it would be super awkward if some of that stuff started happening with her, even more so than it was with him, because at least she was dating him.

Super super awkward, at the very least!

"It could be though," she said, smiling. "And you know we've got many different brands available to test out that hypothesis."

To that, Turtle could only grin. "Taking a topic and converting it into a sale's pitch," she said. "Very nicely done, Maron."

"I've been practicing," she confessed, grinning. "I don't want to do something poorly."

"Well," Turtle said with a grin, "you're doing great, so I don't think there's any chance of that with here, that's for sure."

With Apu!
